LANCASTER, SC (July 30) – Timbo Mangum scored a very popular win Saturday night at Lancaster Speedway as the hometown driver collected $2,000 for his first National Dirt Racing Association (NDRA) Road Show presented by Heintz Performance victory of 2011.
Spartanburg, SC’s ‘Big A’ Anthony Sanders grabbed the point as the green flag waved for the 40-lap topless affair. Mangum quickly moved to second with fast qualifier Donnie Austin and Rambo Frankliln in tow.
Sanders sped out to a comfortable lead as Mangum distanced himself from the rest of the pack. As the early laps clicked off Mangum began to put some pressure on Sanders for the point. As Mangum began to look to the inside of Sanders and huge crowd on hand roared to their feet to cheer on the hometown favorite who cut his racing teeth at the big ½ mile.
Mangum finally made the move to the lead on lap 14 with a power move to the inside off turn four. While under caution series point leader Zack Mitchell went pitside with engine problems relegating the 15-year-old driver to a 17th place finish.
On the restart Ron Parker made his presence known as he shot into second with Franklin and Brandy Baker now in the mix. Baker and Parker swapped second place a couple of times as Mangum continued to lead the field.
Steve Hendren’s strong run came to an end late in the event with a broken radiator hose. This sidelined the Rutherfordton, NC’s bid for the point lead after Mitchell’s problems.
On the restart Parker really turned up the heat on Mangum but he was too strong for the field and sped to the win. Parker, Baker, Franklin and Ross Bailes rounded out the top five. Sanders, Gib Gibbons, Jimmy Schiltz, Ken Rominger Jr, and Joe Gwilt rounded out the top ten.
Gib Gibbons scored the $300 Heintz Performance Hard Charger award with his seventh place finish. Jeff Smith was the winner of the $1,000 gift certificate from Hendren Racing Engines. Mangum and Chad Dunn also won $500 Hendren Racing Engines gift certificates.
