Post Boyd's speedway results 8-12-2011...........'it can't get much better than this"!

(Ringgold/Chattanooga) Boyd’s Speedway Results. With 80 cars signed in to compete in their respective divisions racing got quickly underway. First out would bring the qualifying heat races in each division to secure their starting position for the nights feature events. Heats race winners were in B-Hobby Dallas Brooks and Patrick Wilson, Crate Late Models Mike Weeks and Rick Hixson, A-Hobby Steve Tate and Booger Brooks, Steel-Headed Late Models Riley Hickman and Jamie Perry and finally in FWD Tommy Hughes and Derrick Forgey. Now before I go any further with this week’s recap let me remind you of Mother Nature’s Full Moon that was on full display last night. Many people have always said the worst and the best will always show their face on nights of racing with a full moon well last night was no different. Cautions flew early and often in the respective heats as many competitors sought to win it all on the first laps, especially the A-Hobby which seemed to take forever to run their respective heats. But as the night went on many began to settle into the task of racing not wreaking.

In the first feature the B-Hobby division was brought to the front stretch to lineup for their nights 15 lap $170 to the winner feature event. With season points leader and multiple feature winner Dallas Brooks starting from the pole the other 12 competitors certainly had their work cut out to unseat him from the top spot. Outside pole position starter Patrick Wilson seemed to be up for the challenge taking the early lead on lap 1. Wilson had everything under control leading every lap until the halfway point when he slowed with a broken rear axle that ended his night and handed the lead to Dallas Brooks. It was on the same lap that ended several racers night with a spin and crash in turn 2. Brooks would go onto prevail once again as the man to beat capturing another Feature Win #11 of the year followed by Corey Sanders, Mike Chapman, Lamar Hughes and Jonathon Sims.

Next out brought the Crate Late Model division and after many weeks of the “Welshan Train” rolling through Boyd’s Speedway recently the other competitors had worked hard to close the gap on his reign at the top. Last week’s feature winner Rick Hixson was set to start on the outside front row along with the pole sitter Mike Weeks while Welshan would roll off in the sixth place. Weeks took the early lead on lap 1 over Hixson with Jeff Smith in tow. An early caution on lap 1 down the backstretch ended the night for a few races as a spin by Kenny Kizzar, Jerry Coffman, Miller, David Tindell and Stanley left several racers with heavy sheet metal damage. It didn’t take long for the yellow flag to fly once again as the race was slowed once again on lap 2 with a crash that brought the field to a complete stop under a red flag to allow track officials to clear the racing machines of Grady Stokes, Sims, Cody Martin (heavy damaged front end), Grayson York and Jimmy Elliott. Once the racing action got back underway Weeks would continue to lead now Jeff Smith who had made his way around a fading Rick Hixson, but another caution on lap 5 would slow the field once again for the slowed Grady Stokes. The racers then seem to settle into a good racing form as the clicked of lap after lap with Smith racing the leader Mike Weeks at every corner. Weeks would continue to lead circling the racing facility on the top groove as Smith worked the bottom looking for that little extra he needed to get past Weeks. On lap 16 he found that little extra and was able to motor under Weeks to take the lead bringing Welshan right behind. A lap 18 caution would set up a two lap shootout between Smith and Welshan for the top prize of $800 and another week of bragging rights. Smith would go on to hold off Welshan to take the victory, rounding out the top five would be Weeks, Rick Hixson and Robby Mason.

The A-Hobbies were up next for their 15 lap $250 to win feature event. After last week’s first time winner Steve Tate would find himself starting on the pole alongside current division point’s leader Booger Brooks. Brooks would take the lead on lap 1 until the yellow flag would slow the field on lap 3 for the spinning Gene Hulgan Jr. Once underway Brooks would continue to hold the lead but now was being chased by the #37 of Chuck Cooper. Brooks would run from the top on the multi-grooved racing surface as Cooper worked the lower portion of the track. A lap 9 pass by Cooper over Brooks brought the fans to their feet as the two races side by side with Cooper holding the slimmest of lead. Cooper would capture the win followed by Brooks, Jody Hixson, Lynn Gibson (hard charger award coming from 11) and Jordan Rodabaugh.

Next out brought the Feature Event of the night as the Steel Headed Late Models were set for their 25 lap $1000 to win Feature Race. In what turned out to be the show of the night. A pair of season veterans and multi winners in both the Steel-Headed division but Super Late Model Division as well saw Cleveland’s Riley Hickman and “The Ringgold Kid” Jamie Perry starting from the front row. Perry was seeking his 5th straight Steel Headed Late Model Feature win. Hickman would bring the field to the green flag followed by Perry, Hickman would take the early command racing on the top groove while Perry settle into his favorite bottom side racing groove that has worked so well for him week after week. Caution would fly on lap 11 tighten the field. This gave Perry the opportunity he needed to pass Hickman. Under the caution in also allowed everyone the time to cool those racing tires to gain a better grip on the 1/3 mile clay oval. Perry would take the lead on the restart and seemed to be on the way to his 5th straight victory followed by Hickman, “BUT” Hickman wasn’t through yet! Hickman found an even higher groove once Perry and worked under him and began to close the gap. Hickman began to close on Perry as he worked higher and higher lap after lap on the 1/3 mile clay oval bringing the fans to their feet. Each and every fan watches as he ran near the outside wall gaining more and more every lap. Until on lap 21 sailed into turn 3 nearing the outside wall and motored around Perry to regain the lead bringing the cheers of the fans with him in excitement. Hickman continued to run that newly found high groove the last 4 laps holding off every effort Perry was throwing at him. Following Hickman and Perry was Cleveland’s Lamar Scoggins, Todd Hernandez and Jake Knowles (who came from the 19th starting position to race into the top five).

The last of the nights feature events saw the FWD’s line up for their 12 lap feature. Tommy Hughes and Derrick Forgey brought the field to the green, but like most of the night’s event it didn’t take long for the yellow to fly. Forgey would lead with Hughes in tow. Newly crowned division points leader Thomas Gibson would move into the second place running position over Hughes. A late race penalty on Hughes for his second jumping the start took him out of the top five running spot and was placed to the rear. Derrick Forgey would go onto capture his win over Thomas Gibson, Richard Hickman, Hailey Cresswell and fighting his way back to fifth Tommy Hughes.

Once again a great night of racing on what has been the “Best of the Best” racing surfaces giving racers many lanes to choose from during the evening of racing. Racing was all completed by 10:15 as the crowd filed out.
