Ford 7.5 compared to a Ford 8.0 rear end.

I am wondering if anyone had weighed the 7.5 and 8.0 rear ends or components and found out if one is lighter than the other. Common sense says that the 7.5 is a lighter unit but I was wondering if anyone has gone to the trouble of doing all the weighing.

If there isn't s significant difference in rotating weight is there any advantage of running the 8.0 over the 7.5?

I have not weighed the 7.5 but I do know that the 6.75 weigh's in at 125#'s and the 8" weigh's 143#'s

The most obvious difference is that you can change gear ratios on the 8 inch by just changing the center section. It can be done in as little as an 1 hour. Not so the 7.5.

I'd be disappointed if I couldn't change the whole 7.5" rear end housing & all in an hour's time, an 8" or 9" in less....

i agree Jerry,it takes us about 25 minutes to change out the whole 7.5" rearend...and about 45 minutes to change 8"/9"...when changing a 6 3/4" or 7.5" you dont even have to mess with gear oil like you do a 8"/9".

not sure about the difference in weight but i use the 8in for one main reason. unless it's against the rules you can make the control arm mounts as long or short as you want. the upper mounts on my 8in are twice the height as a stock 7.5. as far as changing an 8in chunk or the complete 7.5 it is a wash. 20 min. for either depending on how big of a hurry i'm in. however an 8in chunk takes up a lot less space in you truck or trailor in case you have to change one at the track. i do agree with 62 about the gear oil mess.

That was another reason I was wondering about the 8in rear end. I know it is made like a 9in with the center section and the steel housing you so can alter the mounts. Thanks for the info guys!

we run the 7.5 but just switched to a 8.8 we make the reas 3link no problem just takes some times gear change under 10 mins at the track if need be. 8" has a better gear selection thats for sure .

ill take a pic of my new 8.8 when its finished up you can weld to the cast housing if you do it right we even run a j bar on our 7.5 and 8.8s

You can build a 9 inch lighter than any of those. Aluminum center section, light spool and gear, gun drilled axles, ect.
