Spring 30/40 Fast Facts and Tidbits
-The Spring 40 first appeared on the Ponderosa Speedway schedule in 2003 and was the first “big Late Model event” ran by then first year track promoter, the late John Bradshaw. The event survived a one hour delay after time trials to see Johnny Wheeler of Campbellsville, KY grab the 40 lap, $3,000 to win event, that saw numerous caution for flat tires. Wheeler would outdistance 2002 STARS Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series champion Eddie Carrier, Jr. for the win, with 2003 STARS Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series champion Mike Marlar taking third, while 2005 O’Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series co-champion Mike Jewell would finish fourth, and Timmy Yeager would complete the top five.

-Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN would grab the ’06 win in the Spring 40 after race leader Mike Jewell got caught up in an accident with just 8 laps remaining in the event. Owens would also be involved, but did not make contact until after the caution flag had already been waved and was able to continue racing. Aaron Hatton, Justin Rattliff, Dustin Neat, and Bryan Barber would complete the top five for the evening. It took four attempts to finally get this event ran as it was rained out on three different occasions early on in the ’06 season.

-Greg Johnson of Bedford, IN would win the 2004 version of the Spring 40, putting himself atop the O’Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series points standings at that time behind the wheel of the Danny and Diane Preston owned Double D Motorsports Rayburn entry wrenched by Jeff Gullett. Aaron Hatton, who would go on to be the 2004 O’Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series champion, would take runner-up honors, while 2003 Spring 40 winner would take third, with Brad Neat and Shannon Thornsberry completing the top five.

-Current track promoter Larry Yantz took over at the promotional helm of the Ponderosa Speedway to begin the 2005 season and the event was not contested. Yantz was voted the 2005 O’Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series Promoter of the Year by series officials and drivers for the season. Yantz is a former Dirt Late Model car owner who owned Johnny Wheeler’s winning mount in the 2003 Spring 40 event.

-In 2007, Aaron Hatton would parlay a ninth starting position to a win in the 40 lap, $3,000 to win 4th edition of this Spring event. Trailing Hatton at the drop of the checkered flag were Mike Marlar, Victor Lee, Justin Rattliff, and Jerry Rice.

-For 2008, the Spring 40 would become the Spring 30 and pay $1,500 to win and would be unsanctioned and be the warm-up event to the 1st Annual Chris Estes/Brad Pena Memorial that would take place the following evening, but the event would be cancelled due to inclement weather and would not be rescheduled.

-The Spring 30 that scheduled again for the first Friday in April to be run in conjunction with the Chris Estes/Brad Pena Memorial would again fall victim to Mother Nature and would not be rescheduled.

-The 2010 version of the Spring 30 played to beautiful weather and Justin Rattliff of Campbellsville, KY would take the win in the event over TN native Shon Flanery, WV native Eddie Carrier, Jr., TN racer Mike Marlar, and Eric Wells of Hazard, KY. The American Modified Series debuted at this event as well and Randle Sweeney of Clifty, KY was the winner of the Arizona Sport Shirts 30 over Russ Gabbert, Devin Gilpin, Bryan Barber, and Jason Wheatley.

-The 2011 Spring 30 event would be weathered out and would not be rescheduled.

-There have a total of sixty-eight (68) different drivers have made the Spring 30 race. Those drivers making the event for the first time in 2010 included Shon Flanery, Eric Wells, Jordan Bland, Skylar Marlar, D.J. Wells, Arnie Fields, Brandon Fouts, Ernie Cordier, Aaron Ridley, and Dustin Linville.

-Drivers with the most starts in the Spring 30 at four (4) each include Bobby Carrier, Jr., Aaron Hatton, Greg Johnson, Brad Neat, Dustin Neat, Johnny Wheeler, and Bobby Wolter, Jr.
