couple questions? anyone?
Do you all think a oil pan can give you horsepower? and also while i was a big race in texas this past weekend we saw a motor with a harmonic balencer that i swear was like a qtr inch thick what was it? internally balenced?

A well designed oilpan whether wetsump or drysump is worth a a few hp.The bigger the engine the bigger the balancer is required. All race engines are internally balanced.

cu. inch of the engine has nothing to do with it. weight of the internals does. a #36 crank, ultra light rods and flyweight pistons dont add up to much, so you dont need much of a balancer

The crankshaft is a spring, the longer the throws on the crank the larger the balancer should be to control the harmonics of the crank. Yes weight has some to do with it but length of throw also comes into play and the farther you get from the center the more you need.

Well not all race engines are internally balanced, there is still a bunch of 400 SBC with stock crank still making 1000's of laps each year.

A 400 has a huge weight in the balancer and on the flywheel that was designed for a 4000 rpm truck motor. How many hundred lbs. does that equal at 6000 plus rpm trying to rip the crank snout off? All race motors "should" be internally balanced.
