With regard to asphalt racing (my experience)... You can get both in a non grooved slick. The Hoosiers are much more consistent in size. The American Racers seem to vary in size from tire to tire. This can be both beneficial and unfortunate when trying to establish proper stagger. It is not uncommon to find AR left side tires that are bigger than right side tires. Also, the American Racer tires do not hold air long term! I've got some mounted now that will lose nearly all air pressure in less than two days. The Hoosiers seem to hold air much longer. American Racer tires seem to have some better long run speed consistency though. It has been our experience that AR tires are faster than Hoosiers at the end of long runs. I don't believe that there is a significant competitive advantage to either tire.
