    Ponderosa Speedway’s 4th Annual Weekend Warrior May 2; 17th Annual Pete Abell Memorial May 3

    Junction City, KY-April 28, 2014- After a weekend off, Ponderosa Speedway track promoter Jerry Denson and staff are set to return with dirt track racing in the form of a Friday-Saturday twinbill of competition at the 3/8 mile D-shaped red clay oval better known as “Kentucky’s Baddest Bullring” with the 4th Annual Weekend Warrior event on Friday May 2 ($800 to win for Pro Late Models and $600 to win for Sportsman) and the 17th Annual Pete Abell Memorial event on Saturday May 3 ($2,500 to win for Super Late Models and $1,000 to win for Modifieds).

    The Friday May 2 racing program will feature the track’s 4th Annual Weekend Warrior event, featuring the Pro Late Models racing for $800 to win, Sportsman racing for $600 to win, and Pure Street racing for $200 to win. Also on the May 2 racing schedule will be Super Late Models racing for $1,000 to win and Modifieds racing for $700 to win. Also added will be Four Cylinders (FWD and RWD) racing for $100 to win (purse will be based on car count). RACEceivers are mandatory for all divisions and can be rented at the track at driver registration, with all drivers needing to be signed at the time for the drivers meeting that evening at 7:00 p.m.

    The Saturday May 3 racing program will feature the track’s 17th Annual Pete Abell Memorial event, paying $2,500 to win for Super Late Models and $1,000 to win for Modifieds, along with a full racing program for the Pro Late Model ($600 to win 12 or more entries; $400 to win 11 entries or less), Sportsman ($300 to win), and Pure Street ($200 to win) division, plus Four Cylinders (FWD and RWD) will again be on the card racing for $100 to win (purse will be based on car count). The Super Late Model division will have a $50 entry fee for this event. All Super Late Models that start a B-Main and do not transfer to the A-Main event will receive $50 tow money. RACEceivers are mandatory for all divisions and can be rented at the track at driver registration, with all drivers needing to be signed at the time for the drivers meeting that evening at 7:00 p.m.

    The Weekend Warrior event was originally derived for the Sportsman division and was first contested in 2009 and won by Bartley Grant of Berea, KY. Randy Petro of Columbus, IN would take the win in the event in 2010, while the event would not be held in 2011 and 2012. The event did return to the schedule in 2013 and Glen Hounshell, Jr. of Mount Vernon, KY would take the win in the event and is the defending race champion. This will be the first time in the history of the event that the Pro Late Model division will be racing for added money as well ($800 to win) at the event.

    The Pete Abell Memorial returns to the track schedule in 2014 after not being held in 2013. Darrell Lanigan would will the inaugural event in 1995, while chassis builder C.J. Rayburn of Whiteland, IN would take the win in 1996, while Lanigan would return to victory lane in the 1997. Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN would take the race win in 1998, while Scott James of Lawrenceburg, IN won the race in 1999, with Timmy Yeager of Harrodsburg, KY picking up the win in 2000. Mike Jewell of Scottsburg, IN would take the win in 2001, while the event would not be held in 2002, with Johnny Wheeler of Campbellsville, KY won the race in 2003. The event would be cancelled due to weather in 2004, but returned in 2005 with Steve Hillard of Sadorus, IL taking the win, followed in 2006 with a win by Chris Combs of Isom, KY, while Aaron Hatton of Mount Sterling, KY took the victory in 2007. Victor Lee of Danville, KY won the 2008 contest, while Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN would take the win in 2009, with Justin Rattliff of Campbellsville, KY becoming only the second repeat winner in the event’s history by taking back-to-back wins in the race in 2010 and 2011. Dustin Neat of Dunnville, KY won the event the last time it was held in 2012.

    Super Late Models (25 laps): 1st- $1,000, 2nd- $500, 3rd- $400, 4th- $375, 5th- $350, 6th- $300, 7th- $250, 8th- $200, 9th- $175, 10th- $150, 11th through 18th- $125 to start.
    Pro Late Models (25 laps): 1st- $800, 2nd- $400, 3rd- $225, 4th- $200, 5th- $175, 6th- $150, 7th- $140, 8th- $130, 9th- $120, 10th- $110, 11th through 18th- $100 to start.

    Activities for the Friday May 2 4th Annual Weekend Warrior event will see the general admission area and pit area open at 4:00 p.m. The drivers meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m., with practice laps set to begin at 7:20 p.m. Time trials will get underway at 7:45 p.m., with racing set to take the green flag at 8:30 p.m. Ticket prices on Friday May 2 in the general admission area will be $15 for adults, with children ages 12 and under admitted FREE with a paid adult, while a pit pass will be $35.

    Activities for the Saturday May 3 17th Annual Pete Abell Memorial event will see the general admission area and pit area open at 4:00 p.m. The driver’s meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m., with practice laps set to begin at 6:50 p.m. Time trials will get underway at 7:15 p.m., with racing set to take the green flag at 8:00 p.m. Ticket prices on Saturday May in the general admission area will be $18 for adults, with children ages 12 and under FREE with a paid adult, while a pit pass will be $35.

    Ponderosa Speedway last raced on Friday April 18 and feature event winners that evening included Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN in Super Late Models, Elliott Despain of Campbellsville, KY in Pro Late Models, Michael England of Glasgow, KY in Modifieds, and Allen Hackworth, Jr. of Waco, KY in Sportsman.

    Track championship point leader heading into the Friday May 2 event are Dion Benningfield of Lebanon, KY in Super Late Models, Gary Yeager of Harrodsburg, KY in Pro Late Models, Michael England of Glasgow, KY in Modifieds, and Glen Hounshell, Jr. of Mount Vernon, KY in Sportsman.
