Rodney Sanders Crowned 2014 USMTS Champ; Knoxville Next

Happy, Texas (09/22/14) – Rodney Sanders enjoyed yet another phenomenal weekend in his #20 Swan Energy/Kimrad Transport/Wichita Tank Racing/MB Customs Open Wheel Modified as he claimed two wins during the annual Fall Jamboree to go with his second United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) championship.

The final event in the Hunt for the Casey's Cup with the USMTS began on Thursday night with the opening round of the 16th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree at Deer Creek Speedway (Spring Valley, Minnesota). Rodney Sanders not only raced to his 25th USMTS victory of the season, but clinched his second consecutive USMTS National Championship! The mega-event opened on Thursday evening with a stout field of 92 entries registering for the $5,000-to-win event. Sanders entered the event with a comfortable lead atop the points chart. A fifth to second run in his heat race resulted in Rodney going to the redraw, where he received the sixth starting spot for the 40 lap feature. In the main event Sanders had made his way into second by lap 15, chasing down early leader, Zack VanderBeek. After trailing VanderBeek for the next ten laps, Sanders took control and went on to score the win over VanderBeek, Jason Krohn, Nate Wasmund, and Jeremy Payne.

Rodney drew the thirteenth starting spot for his heat race on Friday night before advancing to an eighth place finish. As a result he would have to run a b-main, where a seventh to third run earned him the twenty-sixth starting spot on the feature grid. Sanders was battling around mid-pack near the halfway point of the feature when he was involved in two-car tangle that sent him to the pits with a last-place finish.

The weekend was set to come to a close on Saturday, however a day of blue skies and sunshine quickly turned to dark skies, rain and lightning in the early evening and forced the postponement of the 16th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree finale until Sunday afternoon.

Sanders started the reschedule day with an impressive charge from thirteenth to third in heat race action, sending him to the redraw for the 50 lap, $12,000-to-win finale. Starting the three-wide, 30-car main event from the outside-front-row, Rodney took charge on the opening lap and never looked back. Terry Phillips finished a close second followed by Stormy Scott, Brandon Davis, and Bryan Rowland. The win marked his thirty-second of 2014.

“At the beginning of the year, I never could have imagined having this kind of season,” Sanders said in victory lane. “I’m so lucky to have the sponsors and crew around me that I do to make this all work. None of this happens without them."
