better air flow always means better performance

a 5" element has the capability to flow more air --thats a plus

a 5" element has more area inside the aircleaner housing which means less turbulaence entering the carburetor---that a plus

a 5" element will retain more debris before hindering power---thats a plus

a 5" element can be used to adujust the height to the fresh air source----thats a plus

    on the flip--------------

a 5" element can get too far out of the hood creating a syphon effect on fuel---thats bad

a 5' element can be a site obstruction for the driver---thats bad

all of the above are accurate pros and cons however nothing is a night and day difference the plus sides are very small increases

the one thing that I do NOT like about 5" elements over a 4" is the leverage it has against the air cleaner stud...
the G force that the air cleaner pulls on the stud is related to how high the element is

as we get the airfilter higher it has more of a tendancy to pull away from the carb when the car is in the corner---this not only allow allows dirt to enter but also erases any designed airflow that we have created with air cleaner bases

with all that said we like and recommend 4" elements however we have many customers using 5" very successfully

I agree Brad....a 5 foot tall air filter would create quite an obstruction for a driver, then again most drive at the end of the hood anyways! LOL
