Overton Claims Southern Nationals Victory at Wythe
12-Race Miniseries Continues This Week

EVANS, Ga. (07/14/20) – Brandon Overton put his Wells Motorsports No. 76 Crossfit Overton/ Allstar Concrete/ Longhorn Chassis by Wells/ Clements Racing Engine-powered Super Late Model in Victory Lane for the tenth time this season on Saturday.

Overton held off Chris Madden in the closing laps to win the Schaeffer’s Southern Nationals Series event at Wythe Raceway in Rural Retreat, Va. Finishing just 0.188 seconds ahead at the finish line, Overton earned $10,053 for the victory.

On Friday night, Overton invaded Smoky Mountain Speedway (Maryville, Tenn.) for the Southern Nationals opener. After laying down the third fastest time in his group, Overton suffered transmissions issues that prevented him from completing a lap in his heat.

Charging from the tail of his B-Main to pick up the win, Brandon locked into the 17th-starting position for the opening night feature. With $10,053 on the line, Overton advanced through the field 13 spots to register a fourth-place finish behind Chris Madden, Dale McDowell, and Cory Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word). Ross Bailes finished in fifth.

The following night at Wythe Raceway, Brandon came in third fastest in his group before placing third in his heat.

Starting the main event in fifth, Overton blasted past race-leader Madden following a caution on lap 19 and began building a comfortable lead until lapped-traffic became a factor. Fending off a last-lap challenge from Madden, Overton crossed the finish line ahead of Madden, McDowell, Bailes, and Donald McIntosh.

“We had that caution right at the right time and that kinda let me move around to where I needed to go,” said Overton, who said he may have pushed his car a little too hard in establishing a half a straightaway lead midway through the 53-lap race. “When I took the lead, I shouldn’t have ran it that hard. I don’t know if running it that hard … it definitely killed the tire. But I think what killed it more than anything was when I got to them lap cars. Sliding across that black like that, it hurts them tires bad. But I didn’t want to let Madden just drive back by me or get me in traffic, so I was just trying to do anything I could to stay out in front.”

“When you’re leading here, it’s hard,” said Overton. “Like you do not know where to go, like in the end. I took the lead at the top and I kept telling myself ‘Man I think I need to leave low in (turn) two because I passed Vic (Hill) that way.’ Then I just saw the last lap where (Madden) cut off the corner down there and about caught me down the backstretch and he dive bombed (turn) three and he made up a lot of time.

“But it’s so hard to tell yourself. (Crewmen giving signals are) just telling you how far somebody is, and it would’ve been hard for them to tell me, ‘Hey go in high,’ you know when you go by them at 100 MPH. So, I was just running the wrong line right there at the end and my tire was hurt, so I just got lucky. We got the lead at the right time. I probably should’ve eased up on it a little bit but I just … as much bad luck as we’ve been having, I just didn’t want any questions. I wanted to go and hurry up and finish these 53 laps.”

After taking Sunday off, the Southern Nationals made a stop at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tenn. on Monday. With the Top-5 drivers from each qualifying group locked into the $3,500-to-win feature, Overton secured the third spot on the grid.

Overton chased eventual race winner, Madden for much of the 35-lapper before settling for second-place outing. Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word), Bailes, and Logan Roberson rounded out the Top-5 finishers.

After three rounds of the miniseries, Overton is second in the Southern Nationals standings. The tour continues tonight at I-75 Raceway in Sweetwater, Tenn. To learn more about these events, please visit www.SouthernNationalsSeries.com.
