I am amazed that you dont read about this happening every week at some track across the country. Safety is a total joke at most of these dirt tracks.

4m post of the year! Amen!
I wonder how some of these insurance companies sign off on some of these 'catch fences'

I will provide an example. Track not too far from me has a wall with a chain link fence on top. Seen many times people standing right at the fence even holding onto it at times. Do they think this fence will stop a 2300 lb race car from not moving that fence even a foot? Best hope is the fence gives but stop the car at that point.
Link I provided shows a group standing at the fence at the .18 mark. Imagine two late models coming off the turn and getting together getting up into that fence where that group is standing.

if this isn't the time to talk about safety , when is? after the next accident that takes a life?
if this isn't the place to talk about racing related topics , where is?

Without details, there is nothing to discuss.

I have no idea what happened at Hartwell and my post was not blaming anyone there. I was making a point that nearly all dirt tracks are lax in safety. Owners or promoters need to walk around during the race and just look at potential problems. Maybe more lights in a certain area, restrict people from certain areas, keep people back from fences,.. just try to get out in front of something before it happens. Sometimes stuff just happens and nothing could have prevented it, I am aware of that.

No different than the backstretch at Peoria or turns 3 and 4 at Farmer City.

I respectfully disagree , there is always something to discuss when it comes to safety at a race track , whether dirt or pavement , circle or drag , competitor or fan ... something can always be discussed
and , the details are out there just gotta search for them

The motivation for my comments.
1). There is no details for this tragedy in this thread.
2). Historically, in the rare event that there is a tragedy in DLM racing, racers are not given information about the accident with which they can improve their own program or learn something. Instead, they are forced to buy new, more expensive safety equipment with the correct sticker on it.

There are details in the news article. A car crashes into the infield barrier, climbed it, and went through the chain link fence. Three spectators were then hit by the car.
Between those details and viewing videos of races at that track, there is plenty of detail.
