Turned out to be quite a good race once they got past the first 8 or so laps of wrecks and spins, something that seems to be a recurring theme in this series. Kenny Collins stretched out a nice lead and held on to it with a few to go and the spots from 2-7 were up for grabs till the end and had some hard racing.

Facility wise I'll just say that if Burt Reynolds old moonshine movie was remade and needed a track for the racing scenes that Tri County would be my recommendation. Perfect example of an old, tired Southern dirt track.

Mark, No I haven't. Only been to a few in the Carolinas and Georgia and those were some 2 or 3 decades ago. Flo is probably the closest I'll ever get to them. Enjoy most of the racing but no hankering to be part of it though the red clay does remind me of our long gone Ernie Purcell Speedway in Grass Valley.

After losing both Friday's and Saturday's races last weekend due to the fire camp at Chico and no water to prep Petaluma we've got two choices between places we'd like to go on Saturday.

Southern Oregon Speedway in Medford reopened after nothing there last year and has the Rocky Nash Memorial for the TriState Pro Stocks. Rocky was a long time racer who lost his life after a bad accident at Yreka a couple of years ago and was well thought of. As well the Super Late Models are still around in Oregon and will be there too.

Santa Maria Speedway, on the Central Ca Coast also has a show for us that night with TriState rules and the boy's never raced there and it's always been a favorite of mine. It's about an hour longer tow than Medford, 7 hours to 6, but the coast temps in the daytime there are around 73 compared to Medford's 102. And there's some darned good seafood in the SM area.

It's 100+ here today and has been much of the summer so it's not a real hard decision where we'll head. Got friends in the area with sand buggies so I'll think of you on Sunday while at Pismo Beach.

I'll take great racing at a crappy joint over a nice facility with average racing at best any day of the week. Only been to this joint once for a weekly show years back and racing was fantastic. The joint has a pretty cool youtube channel with great vids of each event.

I was not trying to dog you 4t, just curious if ya ever made it out here. What has happened to Santa Maria, when Doug Fort was around and some of the folks past Doug, the track was never dusty and rough, saw the CRA show there this year and it was ugly.

LMM, Sure that you weren't Mark. Just a fair question. It is kind of odd my few in the Carolinas when I've been to so many in Florida, Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, W. Virginia, etc. in that general neck of the woods. Seem to have been to more Midwest states; Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and, of course, about every state west of the Rockies.

As for Santa Maria, it breaks my heart that it isn't what it was when Doug built it in 1965. Think I've written on here that I was there for what was supposed to be the original opening day back then with a Saugus car, '55 Chevy with a 292 in it, with some dirt tires we scrounged up. Couple other Tri Chevies and a '58-59 T-Bird were there too. Doug had hung a sign saying "sorry, didn't get it ready."

After Doug died, Nettie, his widow rented /leased it out for years to several people, some ok and some not. Current promoter seems more interested in renting it for concerts and things of that ilk, going so far as to rebrand it as Stadium 805 for the highway coming from Bakersfield that intersects 101 at the track's location. That said the track Saturday night was tricky, a little dry and powdery early and the moisture came back for the mains and had a couple of hellacious ruts so it was a little tough hitting the right setup. Brent finally settled on running about 4" from the wall and was just about to take 4th in the main and a mud clot packed the carb linkage wide open going into turn 3 and he backed it into the wall. Very little damage but we were done. Richard Petty quote: "When you run against the wall it doesn't hurt so bad when you hit it

My son hadn't been there since he was 9 when we moved to NorCal and that was 36 years ago. Glad he finally got to run there. Plenty of opportunities to race there but often on Holiday weekends and that's a horrible 400 mile 7+ hour ride each way in wall to wall traffic on I-5 so we hadn't.

Pluses for the weekend; great coastal weather, killer clam chowder at Pismo Beach, dogs got to play in the surf, got to see a lot of old friends, friendly bunch at the track, bench racing till near dawn after the races, got the car to work well. Minuses: got a little damage to repair before next show at Petaluma, aforementioned traffic, and topped it off with a burned up wheel bearing on the trailer a few miles out of Paso Robles which we fixed at a winery parking lot after a little "refreshment." Pretty much a standard weekend in this crazy sport.
