Dale McDowell Tops World of Outlaws Thursday Action at Volusia
Team Looks Ahead to Tennessee Tip-Off Classic
Mooresburg, Tennessee (02/21/18) – It may have been a rocky start to the season at Speedweeks for Dale McDowell in the Shane McDowell Racing #17m Will Kinzer Foundation/ Sweet-Bloomquist Chassis Super Late Model, but the Georgia racer quickly found traction.
After battling bad luck early in his Speedweeks 2018 venture, McDowell kicked things into high gear with a $10,000 victory with the World of Outlaws (WoO) Craftsman Late Model Series on Thursday night.
“It seemed like things couldn’t have started any worse than they did the first few races,†Dale McDowell noted. “We just struggled with some new car bugs, and then I made some qualifying mistakes. We didn’t get down though, and we kept digging. When you look around this pit area and see how much talent is here, it just makes a win like this that much more special. Add in the fact that we haven’t won here in almost 20 years and I couldn’t be more proud of what we accomplished here tonight.â€
After a less-than-stellar start to their season one night earlier at Bubba Raceway Park, Monday night brought Dale McDowell and the Shane McDowell Racing team to Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Florida) as they kicked off the UMP DIRTcar Nationals. In a field of 40 Super Late Models, Dale followed up the third-fastest time in his qualifying group with a third-place finish in his heat. Earning the 10th-starting position for the opening night feature, McDowell improved four spots, reeling in a sixth-place finish.
After Mother Nature wiped out Tuesday’s program, Dale McDowell was one of 51 cars in action on Wednesday for the World of Outlaws (WoO) Craftsman Late Model Series season opener. Not able to make up any ground in his heat race, McDowell logged a seventh-place finish, which transferred him into the B-Main. Sending the Top-2 finishers into the opening night feature, Dale would see his night come to an early end with a seventh-place finish.
On Thursday night – after laying down the ninth-fastest time in his qualifying group – McDowell secured his spot into the feature with the fourth-and-final transfer position in his heat race. Rolling off 15th on the grid for the 50 lapper, Dale McDowell methodically navigated his way to the front of the field overtaking race-leader Brandon Sheppard on lap-43. He would hold onto the top spot for the next seven circuits to capture his first win of the season and a $10,000 payday. Sheppard, Jonathan Davenport, Shane Clanton, and Scott Bloomquist completed the Top-5 finishers. The victory marked his first at the ½-mile oval since 1999.
The following night, Dale locked his spot into the A-Main with the fourth-and-final transfer spot in his heat race. Earning the 13th-starting position for the finale, McDowell advanced through the field 10 spots to finish third behind Scott Bloomquist and Chris Madden with Mason Zeigler and Brandon Sheppard rounding out the Top 5.
Wrapping up the 47th annual DIRTcar Nationals on Saturday, McDowell recorded a third-place finish in his heat race, positioning him 11th on the starting grid for the $10,000-to-win finale. Breaking into the Top-10, Dale McDowell gained three spots in the 50-lap affair, recording an eighth-place finish.

The team now turns its attention to the annual Tennessee Tip-Off Classic, which will be held at Smoky Mountain Speedway (Maryville, Tennessee) on March 9-10. The weekend will be highlighted by a pair of $10,000-to-win, WoO Late Model Series events.
