Ray Cook Leads Early at The Gap; Mechanical Gremlins Cost Chance at Early Season Win
(BRASSTOWN, NORTH CAROLINA) Ray Cook and the Wynn Motorsports team invaded the ultra-fast Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tennessee on Saturday afternoon, February 24 for the annual running of the 'Frostbuster.' The Schaeffer's Oil Iron-Man Championship Series presided over the high-speed action at "The Gap" and Ray started off the day by picking up fast time honors during the qualifying session.
After starting from the pole position in the $3,500 to win headliner, Ray led the first seven circuits of the 35-lap affair and was out front on lap eight when he unfortunately dropped a driveshaft. Due to the mechanical woes, the Brasstown, North Carolina ace was forced to retire from the contest in the twelfth position. “I thought we had a good chance to get it done the other day at Bulls Gap,†quoted Cook. “The track started off a little rough, but was getting better and our car was pretty good right out of the box. Then we had some kind of mechanical issue that led to us losing the driveshaft unfortunately. That kind of stuff happens in this sport of auto racing, but we will work hard at the shop this week to get everything back together and ready for North Georgia this weekend.â€
Next up for the #53 team will be a visit to North Georgia Speedway this Saturday evening, March 3 for the opening event on the Ultimate Super Late Model Series calendar. Following an open practice session on Friday, things will heat up at the Chatsworth, Georgia facility on Saturday, as a $4,000 top prize will be on the line in a 40-lap main event.
