Jake Knowles Races to Talladega Durrence Layne Opener Win
Leads Series Standings with Two Events in the Books
Rome, Georgia (04/29/19) – Jake Knowles kicked off his pursuit of the 2019 Durrence Layne Dirt Late Model Series championship in fine style over the weekend. He won Friday night’s opener at Talladega Short Track before registering a runner-up finish on Saturday night in his Knowles Race Parts & Bodies #66 Josh Roberts Trucking/ Coosa Heating & Cooling/ Longhorn Chassis Late Model.
“It was nice to finally get to race. It’s been over a month since the rain let us race last, so this was a nice change of pace,†Knowles commented. “There was a really good field of cars at Talladega the whole weekend. On Friday night we got to the lead around halfway and then cruised from there. Saturday night I was able to make a few runs at the leader, but I got into a lapped car late, and it bent some stuff on the front end, so I couldn’t turn that great. We were lucky to come out of there with a second-place finish with the damage.â€
After enduring four-straight rainouts, Friday night saw the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Series 2019 campaign finally come to life with the opening round of a weekend doubleheader at Talladega Short Track (Eastaboga, Alabama).
In a stout field of 48 cars, Knowles registered the second-fastest time in his qualifying group behind T.J. Brittain, which positioned him fourth on the starting grid for the opening night feature.
Slipping past polesitter T.J. Brittain on lap-18, Jake distanced himself from the field in the remaining 22 circuits to capture his first win of the season and a $2,000 payday. Jadon Frame, John Ownbey, T.J. Brittain, and Cruz Skinner trailed him to the checkers.
The following night, Jake secured his spot into the $2,500-to-win finale with the third-fastest time in his qualifying group. Starting the A-Main in in the fifth position, Jake improved three spots in the 50-lapper to place second behind John Ownbey with Jake Rainey, David Kay, and Dylan Knowles completing the Top-5 finishers.
