Ricky Weiss Earns First World of Outlaws Late Model Win
Wild West Shootout Up Next
HEADINGLEY, MANITOBA, Canada (01/06/20) – A World of Outlaws (WoO) Morton Buildings Late Model Series victory is something that has eluded Ricky Weiss for some time. That changed on Saturday night at Vado Speedway in Vado, N.M.
The 31-year-old Canadian driver piloted his Drydene Performance Products No. 7 J&C Properties/ G-Style Transport/ Team Zero Race Cars/ Vic Hill Race Engine Super Late Model to a $5,000 payday in the inaugural Battle at the Border.
“We’ve been really good,†Weiss said. “We were real good last year, and we’ve just been tweaking and tweaking.â€
Ricky followed up the fourth fastest lap overall in time trials on Saturday with an 8-lap heat race victory. Starting the A-Main in third, Weiss blasted past teammate Chris Madden on lap 14 and held off a charging Brandon Sheppard late to capture the win. Sheppard, Madden, Darrell Lanigan, and Cade Dillard completed the Top-5 finishers.
“Right before the caution, I knew I could rotate the bottom a little bit better than [Madden],†Weiss explained. “I knew we needed to get down there, and then the caution came out and I knew the next challenge was to beat Sheppard [running third] into the [first] corner [on the restart]. If we could do that, I felt pretty good about our changes, and we were able to. I was just trying to play it safe but be smart at the same time.â€
“Now that we got that out of the way, maybe we’ll see a lot more of these wins in our near future. I think we’ve got a pretty good team this year. We’re building bigger and better.â€
On Friday night, Weiss recorded the third fastest time in his qualifying group before capturing an 8-lap heat race victory. Earning the pole position for the $5,000-to-win A-Main, Ricky dropped two spots in the 30-lap affair to place third behind Chris Madden and Brandon Sheppard with Scott Bloomquist and Mike Marlar rounding out the Top-5.
For the final round of the Battle at the Border on Sunday, Weiss fell one spot short of a transfer position in his heat with a fifth-place finish. Grabbing the third and final transfer spot in his B-Main, Ricky locked into the 21st-starting position for the $15,000-to-win finale. Wheeling his way into the Top-5, Ricky Weiss advanced through the field 16 spots to place fifth behind Cade Dillard, Brandon Sheppard, Darrell Lanigan, and Scott Bloomquist.
With the first weekend of the schedule completed, Ricky is currently second in the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series point standings. For more results from these events, please visit www.WoOLMS.com.
