Chris Ferguson Nabs First Win of 2026 at Cherokee Speedway
Claims $15,000 Grassy Smith Memorial Payday
MT. HOLLY, N.C. (July 14, 2026) — Chris Ferguson made his lone start of the weekend count, capturing Saturday night's Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series Grassy Smith Memorial at Cherokee Speedway aboard his Live Oak Aesthetic and Family Dentistry No. 22 Stinger Race Car Late Model.
The $15,000 payday marked Ferguson's first victory of the 2026 season and his first career Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series triumph.
“Chris (Madden) drove his butt off and he’s the man to beat here, so luckily I was able to be a little better tonight,” Ferguson said. “Man, I’m just so thankful to win this race. Freddy and Grassy (Smith) meant a lot to my family and to finally get the Grassy — I’ve led it I don’t know how many times, but never sealed the deal. Them cautions at the end had me a little worried, but I’m just tickled to death about it.”
The North Carolina native crossed state lines into South Carolina on Saturday afternoon for the event honoring the late Clarence "Grassy" Smith, father of National Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer Freddy Smith.
After qualifying second-fastest in his group, Ferguson drove to a flag-to-flag victory in his heat race to earn a second-row starting position for the 50-lap feature.
Ferguson tracked down early leader Chris Madden, making the winning pass on lap 12 before surviving multiple late-race restarts to secure the victory. Madden narrowed the deficit over the closing laps, but Ferguson held on to win by 0.345 seconds. Series point leader Ashton Winger completed the podium in third.

Ferguson is tentatively slated to return to action this weekend as the Schaeffer's Southern Nationals heads to Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Georgia, for the fifth stop of the 11-race tour. Drivers will battle for a $10,053 winner's check in Saturday night's main event.
