Dereck Ramirez Records Best USMTS Finish of 2012; Welcomes K&N Filters
Woodward, Oklahoma (07/17/12) – Dereck Ramirez entered a trio of Casey's USMTS events over the weekend in his #4r Ramirez Motorsports/Hughes Race Car/Pro Power Racing Engine Open Wheel Modified and came away with three top ten finishes as well as his best finish of the 2012 campaign thus far with a second place run.
Thursday evening found Ramirez Motorsports opening a tripleheader weekend with a $4,000-to-win, Casey's USMTS National Championship event at I-35 Speedway (Winston, Missouri). Thirty-seven competitors were on hand for the event, and after winning the third heat race Dereck locked into the redraw for the main event. He was the lucky recipient of the second starting spot for the 40 lap feature as he joined Chris Brown on the front row. Ramirez battled for the lead early in the event before ultimately slipping to a sixth place finish behind race winner, Ryan Gustin, Chris Brown, Johnny Scott, Zack VanderBeek, and Jon Tesch.
Friday night found the team rolling into Lakeside Speedway (Kansas City, Kansas) as the Casey's USMTS tour made its debut at the state-of-the-art, 3/8 mile oval. Forty-six cars were on hand for the event, and Dereck began his night by advancing from the seventh starting spot to a fifth place finish in his heat. His heat performance did not earn Ramirez enough points to lock into the feature, and as a result he had to run a b-main. A sixth to fourth run in his b-main locked him into the nineteenth starting spot for the 40 lap, $5,000-to-win feature. During the course of the finale he advanced nine spots on his way to a tenth place finish.
The team concluded their tripleheader weekend on Saturday evening as they made their second trip of the season to Salina Highbanks Speedway (Salina, Oklahoma) for another $4,000-to-win, Casey's USMTS National Championship event. With forty-two entries in the pits Ramirez advanced from the fourth starting spot in his heat to a second place finish to lock into the redraw for the feature. In the redraw he received the pole position for the 35 lap finale with Ryan Gustin starting alongside him. Gustin snagged the lead at the drop of the green flag and Ramirez pursued him for the duration of the event before settling for a second place finish, which marked his best tour finish thus far into the 2012 season.
Dereck is now seventh in the latest Casey's USMTS National Championship standings. Full results from the weekend are available at www.USMTS.com .
