Jason Hughes Tops Gustin for Eighth Win of 2012
Westville, Oklahoma (7/24/12) – Jason Hughes recently concluded a four race swing with the Casey's USMTS tour in his #12 West Siloam Pawn/Gressel Racing/Hughes/Mullins Race Engines Open Wheel Modified, and during it he did what few competitors have been able to do lately and that is outrun Ryan Gustin.
A four-race weekend opened for the Casey's USMTS competitors on Thursday night at Raceway Park (Jefferson, South Dakota). The $4,000-to-win, national championship point's event saw twenty-two cars in action, and after winning his heat race Hughes started seventh on the grid for the 40 lap feature. Jason went on to advance five spots on his way to a second place finish at the checkered flag behind race winner, Ryan Gustin.
On Friday night the opening round of the 2nd Annual Silver Dollar Nationals was held at I-80 Speedway (Greenwood, Nebraska) as a $4,000-to-win, Casey's USMTS national championship program was highlighted. A strong field of thirty-two competitors filled the pit area, and a sixth to third run in his heat race saw Hughes in the redraw for the 40 lap feature. In the redraw he received the seventh starting spot for the second straight night. When the green flag dropped Hughes began his march to the front of the pack and caught the leader, Ryan Gustin in the closing laps. The duo battled side-by-side for the lead until Hughes took control of the top spot with two laps to go. He would go on to record his eighth win of the season, which came over Gustin, Rodney Sanders, Terry Phillips, and Chris Brown.
The final night of the 2nd Annual Silver Dollar Nationals was held on Saturday night at I-80 Speedway (Greenwood, Nebraska) in front of a capacity crowd. The $2,000-to-win, Casey's Cup Qualifier saw twenty-eight cars in action, and after finishing second in the second heat race he locked into the redraw for the feature, where he was the recipient of the pole position with Chris Brown starting to his outside. As the race went green Brown bolted to the lead with Hughes in tow. Jason would drive past Brown for the lead on lap 9, and would maintain the top spot until lap 12, when Terry Phillips took over the lead. Hughes battled the handle over the remainder of the event as he slipped to a fourth place finish behind race winner, Terry Phillips, Stormy Scott, and Chris Brown.
The team concluded an ultra-busy, four race stretch for the Casey's USMTS Modifieds on Sunday evening with a $4,000-to-win, national championship event at Nobles County Speedway (Worthington, Minnesota). Twenty-one cars entered the event, and via heat race action Jason earned the ninth starting spot for the 40 lap feature. During the course of the feature he advanced five spots on his way to a fourth place finish behind race winner, Ryan Gustin, Jason Krohn, and Jon Tesch.
