Ray Cook Grabs Top Five in World of Outlaws Stop at Duck River; Ralph Latham Next
(BRASSTOWN, NORTH CAROLINA) The "Tarheel Tiger" Ray Cook had a pair of $10,000 to win World of Outlaws Late Model Series shows on his schedule for May 17-18 in the Volunteer State of Tennessee. Following a rain-out of Saturday's program at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, Ray traveled to Duck River Raceway Park in Wheel on Sunday to battle the cars and stars of the national touring series.
The Brasstown, North Carolina native timed in fifth fastest in Group B during qualifying and later finished second in his heat race. After redrawing the sixth starting spot prior to the 50-lap feature, Ray enjoyed a fast racecar throughout the caution-free affair and was fifth at the finish behind only winner Darrell Lanigan, Tim McCreadie, Mike Marlar, and Rick Eckert. Ray and the Tommy Pope Racing team plan to take the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend (May 23-26) off from racing action, as Ray will promote a pair of Old Man’s Garage Spring Nationals Series events and two more Southern Nationals Bonus Races in the states of Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Instead, the #53 team is eyeing the 28th Annual ‘Ralph Latham Memorial’ as their next event on Saturday evening, May 31. The venerable Florence Speedway in Union, Kentucky will once again host the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series on that Saturday and a $10,000 top prize will be on the line.
