Podium Finish for Dereck Ramirez in King of America
Woodward, Oklahoma (03/31/15) – Dereck Ramirez led the first 57 circuits before settling into a podium finish in the $10,000-to-win, King of America event on Saturday night in his Ramirez Motorsports #4r LG2 by Owens/Cornett Racing Engine Open Wheel Modified.
Dereck Ramirez returned to Humboldt Speedway (Humboldt, Kansas) over the weekend for the annual King of America Modified Nationals with the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS).
Eighty-two competitors registered for battle in of the one richest events of the year for the USMTS Open Wheel Modified warriors. The format included double heat races on Thursday and Friday with drivers accumulating points toward Saturday night's main event.
On Thursday evening Ramirez advanced from the tenth starting spot to a seventh place finish in the first heat. Later in the second round of heat races Dereck charged to a convincing win after starting second.
Friday night found Ramirez picking up right where he left off the night before. Advancing from fourth to claim another heat race victory in Round #3 before charge charging from eighth to finish third in the final round of heat races.
Dereck's solid performance in preliminary action locked him into the pole position for the $10,000-to-win finale on Saturday night with Jason Hughes alongside. Ramirez assumed the point at the drop the green flag in the 100-lapper and began to pull away to a big lead.
Ramirez saw his advantage reduced as he battled his way through lapped traffic, allowing Hughes to close the gap. Ramirez continued to pace the field for the first half of the race, keeping Hughes at bay until the caution waved on lap 57. Ramirez bobbled ever so slightly through a rough portion of turn-four, allowing Hughes to pull alongside and edge Ramirez by a nose to take the lead on lap 58.
“I knew somebody was ducking underneath me and I could hear somebody up top,†Ramirez said. “So I just tried to keep my car wide, but I was still sort of a sitting duck out there.â€
Ramirez never let Hughes get too far away, keeping him within two or three car lengths until the race’s final caution came out with 19 laps to go. On the restart, thirteenth starting, Rodney Sanders darted to the outside of Ramirez and shut the door as they exited turn 2.
Dereck went on to finish third behind race winner, Jason Hughes, and Sanders. Brandon Davis and Jeremy Payne rounded out the top five finishers. Ramirez Motorsports will take a break from action this weekend before resuming competition, April 9th-11th with a trio of USMTS events. Thursday, April 9th will take the tour to Superbowl Speedway (Greenville, Texas), while Friday April 10th will see an event held at RPM Speedway (Crandall, Texas).
