Hawkins captures Topless at Tyler County
Middlebourne, W.V. : Opening night at Tyler County Speedway saw the pits bulging at the seams that lead to some hot action on the fast ¼ mile. The UFo series landed for the 17th annual Topless 51 for the Dodd’s Sporting Goods Late Models. 40 of some of the areas best drivers signed in for the annual event. After Paul Wilmoth Jr., Tim Dohm, Butch McGill, Jared Miley and Andy Bond notched the heat wins. Devin Friese, Jacob Hawkins and Keith Barbara grabbed the consey victories. The green flag flew with Tim Dohm jumping to the front followed by Bond, Harold Redman Jr., Zack Dohm and Miley the top five. The first yellow came on lap four when Matt Lux looped his mount in turn four. Using double file restarts, T. Dohm still was in command but now Redman, Jared Hawkins (drove to third from thirteenth), Paul Wilmoth Jr., and Z. Dohm were now the top five. Clate Copeman brought out the next caution when he spun in turn two. The race stayed green until lap 12 when Mike Benedum came around in turn four. T. Dohm, Redman, Hawkins, P. Wilmoth and Steve Wilmoth occupied the top five. On the restart Danny Mitchell slowed in turn two slowing the race again. Dohm was still the leader, when on lap 24 Hawkins got by Redman for second and began to apply pressure to Dohm. On lap 26 the front two were door to door for the point. The yellow again was unfurled on lap 27 when Lux slowed in turn four. Dohm, Hawkins, Redman, Wilmoth and Robbie Scott (from twelfth) now filled the top five. The caution came out again on lap 32 for Miley who slowed on the front chute. Hawkins was turning up the heat as he pulled even with Dohm on lap 40. The race again was stopped when Bond slowed in turn four on lap 42. Dohm fended off Hawkins lap after lap until lap 48 when exiting turn two Dohm slowed letting Hawkins shoot by. Hawkins now was the new leader ahead of Wilmoth, Scott, Jacob Hawkins (from seventeenth) and Benedum (from twenty first) were the top five. Jacob Hawkins then motored his way to his brothers tail as the final yellow came out on lap 49. The two Fairmont drivers started the three lap dash side by side. The elder Hawkins was able to held off younger brother for the win. Scott crossed the line in third, Wilmoth was fourth and Benedum was fifth. Hawkins put the Bobby Lake Motorsports / J C Distributors after coming close numerous times in a big event at the Bullring. It was a clean sweep as Bobby Lake Motorsports finished one, two, three.
After an opening lap fracas that took out pole setter Sonny Conley in the Untied Rental FASTRAKs defending track champion Kyle Thomas shot the lead and never looked back. Thomas in his Aluminum Service Center / Joy’s Disposal #57 crossed the stripe ahead of Rick Strickler, Shawn Jett (from twelfth) Dusty Hamrick and Shane Hitt.
It was a Father and Son duel in the Bridgeport Equipment and Tool TSMA Modifeds. In only sophomore season third generation driver Travis (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son took his first career heat win. He started on the pole and grabbed the front spot at the outset. (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son seemed poised to make it a daily double by taking his first ever feature as well. But on lap nine his dad, Mark pulled up to his deck lid and applied pressure to his son. The younger (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son fended off dad circuit after circuit. A caution with two laps top go set up a dash between the dueling (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)sons. Travis was able to keep Dad behind him to put his A - M Commodities / Fannin Farms machine in victory circle.. Dad finished second. Mike Wilson, Tom Sigler, and Andy Bond completed the top five.
Billy Bunnell drove away for the Champion Sport Cards and Trophies Eco Flyers 4 cylinder feature . Bunnell’s Frosty’s Pre Owned Auto / Easy Eddie’s Auto finished ahead
of Bill Doll, Dustin Wamsley, David Bunnell and Bobby Dennison.
Trey Watson picked up where he left off last year as he claimed the Outlaw Graphic and Automotive Service MWRA Mini Wedges feature. The Sam Watson Trucking sponsored kart bested Wesley baker, Brandon Weigle, Shayla Graffey, and Jordon Doty.
The Herrington – Yoak Ford and Pre Owned Auto Mod Lites and the Sigler fabrication Hot Mod features were fogged out and will be run next week.
Next week at the Bullring the FASTRAK Northeast / Mid Ohio Valley region sanction the third annual Topless 30 for $1,500 to win. Previous winners ’08 Freddie Carpenter, ’09 Mike Pegher, and ’10 Max Blair are expected to be there.
