Robert Baker Wins a Thriller in Eighth Annual Pelican 50
Arkansas Racer Surges from 12th-Starting Spot for $4,000 Payday
Vivian, Louisiana (05/05/18) – Robert Baker only led one lap on Saturday night during the eighth annual Pelican 50, but it was the most important one. The Arkansas-racer – who started 12th – snared the lead from Jack Sullivan on the final lap to score the $4,000 COMP Cams Super Dirt Series (CCSDS) victory at Louisiana’s Ark-La-Tex Speedway.
During the race’s early stages New Vision Graphics Pole Sitter, Jon Mitchell along with Gavin Landers took turns at the front of the field before Jack Sullivan took the lead.
The current point’s leader and Midwest Sheet Metal Marked Man looked to be on his way to his third series’ win of the season, but Baker had other ideas. The pilot of the #71 Black Diamond Race Car surged to the lead on the final lap to take the $4,000 victory.
The win was the second series triumph of the year for the Bryant, Arkansas competitor and the fifth of his career.
Sullivan, Billy Moyer, Cade Dillard, and Tanner Kellick completed the Top-5 finishers.
Baker received the Larry Shaw Race Cars Hard Charger Award after winning the feature from the 12th-starting spot.
Gavin Landers received the Henryetta Ford Hard Luck Award after seeing his night come to an end on lap 8 after a tangle with a lapped car, while battling for the lead.
The COMP Cams Super Dirt Series heads to Mississippi next weekend – May 11-12 – for a doubleheader. Action opens on Friday night with a $2,000-to-win event at Greenville Speedway (Greenville, Mississippi) and a $2,500-to-win program on Saturday night at Magnolia Motor Speedway (Columbus, Mississippi).
