Wythe Raceway to host 2011 opener for 'Southern Nationals Series' on Monday, July 11
RURAL RETREAT, Va. — The Ray Cook-promoted Schaeffer's Specialized Lubricants Southern Nationals Series features 10 Super Late Model special events in the span of 13 days, with races held in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee.
Tracks hosting events in 2011 include Wythe (Rural Retreat, Va.) Raceway, Carolina (Gastonia, N.C.) Speedway, North Georgia (Chatsworth) Speedway, Swainsboro (Ga.) Raceway, Screven (Sylvania, Ga.) Speedway, Rome (Ga.) Speedway, East Alabama (Phenix City) Motor Speedway, Cleveland (Tenn.) Speedway, Volunteer (Bulls Gap, Tenn.) Speedway, and Tazewell (Tenn.) Speedway.
The seventh season for the two-week tour around the Southeast begins Monday, July 11 at Fred and Susan Brown's Wythe Raceway with a $3,500-to-win show at the monster half-mile speedplant.
Jeff Cooke of Spartanburg, S.C., won the 2005 Southern Nationals Series title. Anthony White of Clinton, Tenn., was champion in 2006, with Gray Court, S.C.-chauffeur Chris Madden winning the championships in 2007 and '08. Tommy Kerr of Maryville, Tenn., claimed the championship in 2009, with Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga, winning the title in 2010. Who will be champion in 2011?
Drivers tentatively expected to be in action Monday, July 11 at Wythe Raceway for the Southern Nationals Series opener include Austin and Ty Dillon of Lewisville, N.C., grandsons of legendary NASCAR race team owner Richard Childress. Austin competes in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, while brother Ty currently leads the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards point standings and is a four-time event winner in 2011.
Also expect to possibly see defending series champion Davenport along with former champs Madden and Kerr, plus Brian Reese of Sharpsburg, Ga.; Kennie Compton Jr. of Bland, Va.; Ivedent Lloyd Jr. of Ocala, Fla.; Vic Hill of Morristown, Tenn.; Tony Knowles of Tyrone, Ga.; Brian Booze of Marion, Pa.; Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn.; Brandon Kinzer of Allen, Ky.; Daniel Baggerly of Rural Retreat, Va.; Kerry Jones of Bristol, Tenn.; Chad Ogle of Sevierville, Tenn.; Travis Greer of Marion,Va.; Brett Miller of Greeneville, Tenn., and several others.
Also in action with the Southern Nationals Series Super Late Models will be the Super Street and U-Car divisions.

Adult grandstand admission $20 (however, just $15 with a ticket stub from July 9 presented when you purchase your ticket on Monday, July 11). Senior admission $18. Youth (12-15) $5, with ages (6-11) only $2, while kids 5-and-under are admitted free. Pit passes $30.
The pit gate will open at 4 p.m. and the grandstands at 5 p.m. Hotlaps are scheduled to begin around 7:30 p.m., to be followed by qualifying and then racing action getting the green flag at 8 p.m.
