Event Preview: Full Racing Program April 20th
WHEELERSBURG, OH-The second race of the 2012 season at the Southern Ohio Speedway will get underway on Friday, April 20th with a Full Racing Program. On the card will be Late Models paying $2,000 to win, the Jordan Heating & Cooling UMP Modifieds paying $600 to win, the GCP Engines Sport Mods, and Street Stocks paying $400 to win.
After a successful “Opening Night’ on April 13th, SOS officials are looking forward to the second race of the season. Lots of drivers, especially in the Late Model division, did not have their cars ready to race last Friday with many of those drivers in attendance as spectators for Opening Night. Many more drivers will be ready to race this weekend. SOS officials are also looking forward to a second race on the newly resurfaced track surface. With a brand new surface the more races you can get on it the better the surface will be. Just to be safe, track officials are tentatively planning on bringing back the dust control chemicals this week that seemed to work so well last season.
Late Model Preview
The “Salt Rock Express†Eddie Carrier Jr. was fast on Opening Night and will no doubt be fast again this week. Carrier is two for two this year with wins at Southern and Florence. The Conley Motorsports teams were fast again on Opening Night and should also be fast again on April 20th. Delmas Conley, a six time SOS track champion, looks poised to make a strong run for a seventh track championship as he finished second last week and puts himself second in the point standings. Rod Conley was fast on Opening Night as he won his heat race and was scheduled to start on the outside pole of the feature. Rod was unfortunately forced to scratch from the feature event with a blown engine. R. J. Conley took last weekend off but is tentatively scheduled to be in action this Friday.
Young guns Billy Gullion and Kirk Phillips were also impressive on Opening Night. Gullion tied his best career finish last week by finishing in the third position. Gullion will be a strong contender for the track championship this season and as shown last week is a driver that is going to contend for wins all year. 15 year old driver Kirk Phillips, who is scheduled to compete in some NASCAR K&N East races this year, was strong on Opening Night as he finished fourth. Both of these young drivers will be fast on Friday.
As mentioned earlier, several of the track’s regular Late Model competitors did not have their cars ready to race last week where it is so early in the season, but many plan on having their cars ready for Friday. With a much higher car count expected, the racing action should be hot and heavy. In addition to competing for a $2,000 to win prize, the April 20th races will also serve as a last chance to get laps on the track before the $6,000 to win “Southern 50″ on April 27th.
Jordan Heating & Cooling UMP Modified Preview
Jeremy Rayburn was fast all of last year, and was extremely fast on Opening Night as he led all 20 laps of the feature event to take his first career SOS feature win. Rayburn, who was always a strong runner at the K-C Raceway, will be a strong contender for the track championship as he comes into the April 20th races as the points leader. Last year’s top points runners Adam Colley, Jake Keaton, and Luke Jordan were also fast on Opening Night as they finished second, fifth, and fourth respectively. Meanwhile, newcomers to SOS Jimmy Adams and Dale Lyons put their names in the hat of strong contenders as they finished third and sixth respectively.
It was great racing in the Jordan Heating & Cooling UMP Modifieds last Friday and proves to be another great show on April 20th. April 20th will also serve as the last chance for the UMP Modifieds to get laps on the track before the $1,000 to win show on April 27th.
Street Stocks Preview
For the first time in the new era of the Southern Ohio Speedway, the Street Stock division will take to the track. The Street Stocks, also called Super Bombers, are expected to put on a great show for all of the fans in attendance. SOS officials also want to make it clear that drivers that cars that competed in the Bomber division last season will still be legal to compete in the Street Stock division.
GCP Engines Sport Mod Preview
The racing action in the GCP Engines Sport Mod division is expected to be much more exciting this Friday. Ten cars signed in to compete in the division last week, but six of those cars failed pre-race tech. Once those cars make the proper changes to their cars this week to meet the car rules, the field of cars for Friday’s show should be excellent. Meanwhile, last year’s co-track champion George Caldwell showed that he will be strong once again this season as he took the feature win on Opening Night. A newcomer to the division, Eric Dennison, finished second in the GCP Engiens Sport Mods last week.
Times and Admission Prices
Gates will open on Friday at 4:00 pm with hot laps starting the nights action at 7:30 pm. General admission is $12 for ages 17 and up, $5 for teens ages 13-16, $2 for kids ages 7-12, and FREE for kids ages 6 and under. Pit passes are $25 for ages 13 and up, $15 for ages 7-12, and FREE for ages 6 and under.
If weather would happen to cause a cancelation for Friday’s races, the races will be rescheduled for the following night on Saturday, April 21st.
