Silver Dollar National Winner O’Neal on a Roll
Defending Silver Dollar National (SDN) winner Don O’Neal is on a roll. The “Real Deal†has won three of the last four Lucas Oil races and has closed to within 145 points of series point leader Jimmy Owens. Owens the “Newport Nightmare†doesn’t have a series win but has been Mr. Consistent with seven second place finishes in 11 point races.
O’Neal swept the board last weekend winning Lucas Oil features at both Hartford, Michigan and LaSalle, Illinois. Last year O’Neal started winning the big ones leading off with the $100,000 to win Dream. He then picked up $25,000 by winning the Silver Dollar Nationals and before the season was over added $40,000 for winning the Knoxville Late Model Nationals and $50,000 for winning the Dirt Track World Championship.
Other Lucas Oil drivers who have started to find their rhythm are Scott Bloomquist, who struggled early in the season before winning the back to back Lucas Oil races, first in Virginia at the $25,000 Commonwealth 100 and then at Roaring Knob in Pennsylvania. Bloomquist known as “Dark Sunshine†is currently third in Lucas Oil points. The other driver starting to consistently run up front is four-time former series champion Earl Pearson, Jr. “The Hurricane†seems to have figured out his Longhorn chassis and threatens to be a contender for this year’s series title. Steve Francis rounds out the Lucas Oil top five in points.
On the MLRA side of the ledger, defending series champion John Anderson of Omaha won the MLRA feature at Springfield, Missouri last Saturday night and is now tied for the series point lead with Will Vaught of Crane, Missouri. Jesse Stovall is third, Terry Phillips fourth and David Turner fifth.
The next Lucas Oil race will be May 18/19 at the Batesville Speedway in Batesville, Arkansas for the Bad Boy 98. The following weekend it’s the $30,000 to win Show Me 100 at Wheatland, Missouri. The MLRA will next race on May 25/26 with the Lucas Oil Series at the Show Me 100.
The United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) has been busy as well. Johnny Scott won the National event at Cowtown Speedway in Texas last weekend. Scott is currently fifth in USMTS National points. Jason Hughes took over the USMTS National point lead from a struggling Ryan Gustin, who is now in second, Rodney Sanders is third and Kelly Shryock fourth.
Sanders leads the Casey’s Cup Qualifier points followed by Gustin, Hughes and Stormy Scott are tied for fourth with Terry Phillips fifth. The USMTS will be in action this weekend with national events in Ardmore, Oklahoma and Amarillo, Texas.
The next Super Late Model special at I-80 Speedway will be on Sunday, May 27 for the $5,000 to win Alphabet Soup Race. The winner of the Soup Race will receive a provisional into the Silver Dollar Nationals. If that driver qualifies for the SDN through the heat or last chance races of the SDN, (earning a higher starting spot in the SDN), then the highest finisher of the Soup race not qualified for the SDN will receive the provisional from the Soup Race and a guaranteed starting spot in the $25,000 to win Silver Dollar Nationals on July 19-21.
