BOYD SPEEDWAY RESULT 8-2-2013
(Chattanooga, Ringgold, Ga) With Mother Nature providing some of the fairest racing weather for the first weekend of August fans and racers alike would fill the 1/3 mile clay oval racing facility for what would turn out to be some of the best racing of the season. With over 80 cars signed in to compete in their respected fields we started out with 2 qualifying heats in each division. First up would bring the “Heavy Weights†B-Hobby Division for two 6 lap qualifiers. Jim Gilbert #19 and Jimmy Smith #XXX would reserve their front row starting position for the nights feature by taking their heats. Next out would bring the every competitive Crate Late Models. Defending Crate Late Model Division Champion Jason Welshan would win heat #1 follow by #30 Jerry Coffman. In Heat #2 Todd Morrow #T16 would hold off a hard charging 17S of Jeff Smith. In A-Hobby a pair of second generation racers would prevail with #28 Brandon Stanfield taking the first and last week’s winner #44B Beau Bice taking the second. With 21 Steel Headed Late Models signed in and what a great field of racers there were, Corey Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) #23 would hold off Todd Hernandex #T6 and Jamie Perry #P4 who came from the rear of the field to take the third place finish in Heat #1. In Heat #2 veteran racer #37 Rex Richey would hold off John Owenby #55 and #T22 Mike Tinker. In the nights final heats Brad Cross and James Dykes would best the field of FWD/PONY drivers.
In the nights first Feature the “Heavy Weight†B-Hobbies were called to the racing surface. With #19 Jim Gilbert making a rare front row appearance alongside #XXX Jimmy Smith it didn’t take long for the excitement to begin. A lap 1 caution would see the #XXX of Jimmy Smith roll to the top with engine problems on the first lap. As track officials spread what appeared to be a ton of dirt to absorb the fluids laid down by the XXX it was time to go back to racing, we thought! Another caution flew on lap 2 for a crash on the backstretch that would take out 6 of the night’s competitors. Seeing their night come to an early exit were pole sitter #19 Jim Gilbert with major frontend damage, #C6 Ronnie Kerr, #49 Jason Emahisher, #15 Bonnie Gulett, #24 Floyd Brooks and #34 Oscar Wilson. Dallas Brooks would go on to take the time shorten feature over #43 Charles Williams, #39 Chip Henry and #3 Gary Erwin.
The Crate Late Models were up next for their 20 lap $800 to win Feature Event. Starting on the front row would be a pair of veterans Jason Welshan and Todd Morrow. A fierce battle from the top 4 competitors started at the green and didn’t finish until the checkered flag flew. Jumping to the early lead would see #17S Jeff Smith lead lap one from his second row outside starting position as they raced three wide. Jason Welshan made a quick pass on lap two to regain the lead and brought Todd Morrow along. As Welshan and Morrow battled for the lead Smith was now being challenged by Soddy Daisy’s Jerry Coffman. On lap 5 Smith made the pass on the bottom to gain the second place running position dropping Morrow to third. On lap 7 Coffman made his move and took over the third place running position. The field would slow for the caution brought out by the #111 of David Tindell. Once back underway the battle for the top spot took up just where it had left off. Another caution would bring the field to slowed pace on lap 15 for the #13 Brent Rhodes. It was on this restart that Jerry Coffman decided to turn the volume up as he quickly motored around Jeff Smith into second and began his charge to the front. Coffman would get to the inside of Welshan for the pass, but unfortunately for him it would be on the checkered flag lap. Welshan would hold off Coffman, Smith, Morrow and Bryan Pritchard for yet another Boyd Speedway Feature Win.
The A-Hobby Division was being lined up on the front for their 15 lap Feature Event. A pair of second generation racers had gotten their instruction from their mentors as #28 Brandon Stanfield son of Randy Stanfield and #44B Beau Bice son of Morris Bice were starting from the front row. Bice would make quick move to the front on the first lap, but a lap 1 caution would see the #77 BJ Wilson charged with the races first caution. As in the B-Hobby race the backstretch turned out to be the place you didn’t want to be at as once again a major crash occurred in the same spot. Several cars were damaged in the multi car crash, but the #13 of Jim Clark took his racer home with very heavy frontend damage along with #57 Caleb Patton. Once the debris had been removed and racing got back underway Bice would lead every lap. Taking his third Feature Victory in a row over #44 Michael Brooks, Brandon Stanfield, #77 BJ Wilson (coming back to 4th after his lap 1 caution) and rounding out the top five was #37 Chuck Cooper.
The Main Event was up next as the 21 car field of Steel Headed Late Models rolled into the starting positions. A field that had the drivers lined up to compete that included; Rex Richey, Corey Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word), Jamie Perry, John Owenby, Mike Tinker, Heath Hindman, Dewayne Powell, Skip Arp, Brad Lowe, Casey Hall, Rick Hixson, the Armitage Brothers and many more. The fans were assured to see a great race on this night. Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) and Richey would lead them to the green with Richey taking the lead on lap one. An early caution on lap 2 would see a hard crash in turn one between Rick Hixson and Murphy, NC’s Cort Carringer both taking a hard crash into the outside wall. The two drivers exited their cars and had to be restrained as they weren’t happy with each other’s driving. Both racers would exit with heavy front, rear and side damage. Once racing got back underway Richey would stretch his lead over Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) who was being challenged by Ringgold’s Jamie Perry. Perry was seeking his 4th victory in a row, but Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) was ready for the challenge. Perry threw everything but the kitchen sink at Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) to overtake his second place running position first trying the high side, then the low side, but Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) met each challenge and kept his position. Richey would take his first victory of the year over Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word), Jamie Perry, Skip Arp (who was later DQ’d for being too lite at the scales) Todd Hernandex and Mike Tinker.
The night’s final event would bring the FWD/PONIES to the surface for their 12 lap Feature Event. A pair of FWD’s in Brad Cross and James Dykes would lead the field to the green. A great battle between Cross (FWD), Dykes (FWD) and Perry (PONY) would start at the drop of the green. Cross took the early lead over Dykes on lap one, but Dykes would retake the lead on lap three. The battle between the three would get fiercer as each lap rolled off with each car making contact with each other over and over until on lap 7 when Dykes had had enough and spun the #19 of Perry. Perry sustained heavy damage, but before the cars had rolled around under caution he had exited his racing machine and was in foot pursuit of the #7 of Dykes. Track Officials rolled in on their 4-wheelers to stop what might have happened and order Perry back to his car. Cross would take his victory over Billy Bailey and Bruce Kimber,
Next week the fans will be treated to a once a year visit by the USCS WINGED OUTLAW SPRINT CARS, the 800 Horse powered racing machines that can get around the 1/3 mile clay oval in less than 10 seconds is a sight to see. Make plans to attend, come early as sitting will be at a premium. Also racing will be the Georgia Mini-Sprints, A-Hobby, B-Hobby and Steel Headed Late Models.
