BOYD SPEEDWAY RESULTS 03-15-2014
(CHATTANOOGA, RINGGOLD,GA) It was time to start a new season at the 1/3 mile clay oval of Boyd Speedway and this year not only would it be a new racing season, but with new owners in David Duplissey and Dale McDowell running the show. Great weather and over 90 cars had signed it to battle for the victory in the 2014 Season Opener. But before we could get down to the serious business of racing for the top prizes in each class we had to complete the pre-race qualifying heats in the respected classes. First would see the “Heavy Weights /B-Hobby†bring their racing machines to the track for a single 6 lap heats. Jimmy Smith #XXX would take the lead on lap 3 and finish in front of Dallas Brooks #45 and Jim Gilbert #19. Next up would bring an overflow group of 26 Crates to battle for their starting feature positions. In Heat #1 Ringgold’s Danny Turner #38 would take the pole position for the feature as he was followed by Dustin Golden #47 and Cleveland’s Tanner Works #T35. In Heat #2 Jason Welshan #29 would take the outside pole starting position as he carried the field to the finish line first followed by Craig Burrows #23 and Bobby Mayse #22. The A-Hobby rolled out next as Justin Winters #J1 would battle from his 7th place starting position to take the victory over Joshua Beagan #5 and Luke Gaskins #4. In Heat #2 Tunnel Hill, Georgia’s Jim Clark #46 would take his victory over Jake Caldwell #J4 and Soddy Daisy’s Brandon Stanfield #28. The ever competitive Steel-Headed late Models would be called to the clay oval for the first of two Heats. In Heat #1 Ringgold’s Jamie Perry could show the way followed by Aaron Wilson #14 and Ethan Hunter #15. In Heat #2 John Owenby would finish in front of Andy Picklesimer #1 and Soddy Daisy’s Robby Mason who would come home in 3rd. It was time for the last of the qualifying Heats for the Mini Stocks with a full group of 19 cars ready to battle for the wins. Heat #1 saw Michael Courtney #C11 finish in front of Bruce Kimber #9 and Koty Campbell #C11. In the 2nd Heat Nathan Hair would overtake James Dykes for the win followed by Corey Bettis.
With the Heats now over and the racers finished with any last minute changes and tune-ups on their respected rides it was now “Feature Timeâ€. First would bring the “Heavy Weights / B-Hobby’s back to compete in the first of the Feature Events. A “Special Thanks†to Mtn View Chevrolet for providing Boyd Speedway with the Official Silverado Pace Truck in 2014. With Jimmy Smith leading the field to the green flag he would take the early lead over Dallas Brooks, the two would continue to run in that order for the entire race as Jimmy Smith would take the checkered flag in front of Dallas Brooks. But upon refusing to breakdown due to a protest Jimmy Smith was Disqualified leaving Dallas Brooks the victor. Brooks was followed by Jim Gilbert, Ronnie Kerr, David Vickers and Boonie Gulett.
In the Crate Late Model a decision was made by Track Officials to start all 25 cars in the Feature Event. Starting up front would be a pair of familiar racers not only to the fans but to each other as well. Danny Turner and Jason Welshan a pair of regular Boyd Speedway racers would lead them to the green flag. It wouldn’t take long for the flagman to wave the yellow as a major pile was found in turn 2. As the #5 of Kate Dallenback (yes daughter of famed Nascar racer Wally Dallenback) would spin taking out Jerry Coffman, Kyle May and Will Roland as well as herself. Once back underway Jason Welshan would continue to show the way but by lap 13 he would see a familiar racer in the 2nd. On lap 14 Jeff Smith would make his move and take the lead over Welshan. Smith would go on to capture the checkered followed by Welshan, Danny Turner, Brian Pritchard and Todd Morrow would round out the top five.
The A-Hobby’s were next as Justin Winters and Jeff Clark would pace the field behind the Mtn View Chevrolet Silverado Pace Truck for a couple of laps. It would see Clark take the lead on lap 1 followed by Winters, but an early caution on lap 1 would slow the field as the cars of Shane Langston, Michael Brooks and Tony Walston would head to an early exit to the pits. Back under green a lap 5 pass would see Josh Beagan take the lead followed closely by Justin Winters. The field would be slowed 3 more time due to cautions, but the fans would see the #5 of Josh Beagan take his first checkered followed by Justin Winters, Jake Caldwell ( completing his best Boyd Speedway finish), Randy Walston and Devin Stuart.
The 18 Steel-Headed Late Models were lined up behind the Pace Truck and ready to battle. As in common around these here parts a late comer would tag to the rear of the feature event as the familiar #5 of Ronnie Johnson would arrive only in time to run the feature event. Having not made a lap on the track this evening he readied his machine in the 18th starting position. Once the green flew Perry would take the early lead followed by Aaron Wilson #14. A fierce battle was raging for the 4th and 5th place running order between Andy Picklesimer and Robby Mason. But to the fans delight “The Chattanooga Flash†Ronnie Johnson was making his move. In just over 5 laps he was being scored in 8th place having already moved up 10 spots. Perry continues expanding his lead over the field with a late caution on lap 19 would slow the field. Perry held the top spot, but now Johnson was within the top 5 with 7 laps remaining. On lap 21 Johnson was now following only the lead car of Perry as his found himself all the way up to 2nd place. Johnson would get no further as Perry would hold off Johnson to take the victory followed by Johnson, Chris Wilson, Robby Mason and Andy Picklesimer.
The last of the night features would bring the Mini Stocks (FWD/PONY) class to the front stretch. The field would be slowed by 4 cautions but in the end Michael Courtney would take his victory over Bruce Kimber, David Singleton, Nathan Hair and Koty Campbell.
It was a great opening night, with racing completed by 10:30. A “Special Thanks†to the wonderful “Concession Stand Crew†those hamburgers sure smelt and tasted good even under your distressed cooking conditions. Next week bring yet another first to Boyd Speedway as we host the annual Shamrock 50 Southern All-stars Super Late Model Event with $5000 up for the winner. Come early for seating and some special events to happen before the races get underway. Gates open at 4 pm
