    Default Runner cc question

    I'm building a steel block 406 with alum 23 deg heads with roller cam and wet sump. I'm also considering running it on E85, if that makes a difference in this discussion. I'm not looking to turn super high rpm's, just make good torque with a fairly wide band and a target of about, 600 to 650HP. I've seen several posts on here talking about runner cc and head flow rates, but thats not an area I'm real versed in. What kind of runner cc or flow rate should I be looking for in the package I'm putting together. I was looking at Mullins race engine 23's, but somebody said they thought you had to turn them up pretty hard to make power, I'm looking at maybe turning mid 7's. Does this package sound doable? Any tips, info or advice would be appreciated.

    220-235 runners will work if the rest of the combination is well designed. The Mullins head is a nice piece but for only 600-650hp, you can go cheaper.

    Besides the heads, the correct camshaft is essential. If it is in the budget, have the heads flowed and the camshaft deigned to work with them.

    For what you want i would use the dart pro 1 cnc with a super victor intake

    Thanks. I went over to the edelbrock website and found the Super Victor, but I had to get the part number from summit. For some reason it wasn't listed in the chevy manifolds section. Are the Dart manifolds any good? Just as a frame of reference how hard do you guys turn your dlm stuff? Thanks for your input and advice.

    In our DLM, we usually use a 8200 or 8400 rpm chip and we get up against it right at the end of the straight if our gear is right...It is a 422" SB2.2 ...

    So realistically. how hard should I turn a 406 with 23 deg heads? My goal is to build more for longevity and economy than just all out power. I thought 7 to 7.5 would be plenty...

    The easiest heads to throw on it and make good power is the AFR 220's. No special parts needed either like with 60/40 spaced heads.

    Very little reason to turn a 23* head past 8,200rpms

    When we ran a 377 with DART 230's we ran it up to 7800-8000 and that was it...

    It was a roller engine with a Willy's 750 on a Super Victor, 13:1 type deal. It didn't roll over on it's nose at 8,000, it would keep pulling, but why twist it any tighter with a 23* head was our reasoning...

    IMO if you run it higher than 7600 you are running it out of the making power band and into the making noise band. As stated above, cam and head combination will achieve a wide torque band and driveable power.

    Which 23 deg head and cam combo would you recommend? I'm trying to get the whole package to work together in a 406(4.125x3.75).
