grt floating x yes or no
Have a 99 grt with floating x...ran very competitive with it last year but several people have said to weld up the floating x will help even more...what's the best way to do it?

Yes weld it or drill and bolt it. Will make a difference.

Ours is welded and made a big difference in rigidity..

I think I would try to bolt it first. If you like what it does you can then weld it if you wish.

Is the car tighter when floated ?

I have the floating x and they are welded up except the Rf... And it runs real good, I may try to bolt the Rf and see if I feel a diff then weld it but for now it's a scalded dog and it's a 1999 GRT 1300 Freddys old dream car from 2000!
If your not sideways and all jacked up you must be playing following the leader...

I would not drill and bolt it as thin a wall tube that .095 you would be taking a chance at weakining the chassis.this might hold up for a few races but the forces would wera the bolt or the hole in the tubes would endup being slots. do it right the first time and weld it. you don't have to do a full weld you could just weld the top half first to see if you prefer the change and if not just grind the weld back off. just my 2 cent's

I had to cut one out to repair, one time,and it was rusted so tight,I had to split it. I don't think they move much. Maybe when the chassi was new.

What will welding the X do to the car? Tighten? Loosen? Where on the track will it make changes(entry/middle/exit)?
I have just bought a 05 GRT that has the floating X. I have not heard of this, what was GRT's purpose for doing this?

Thanks for the replys...Car ran really good on smaller tracks but when i took it to a half mile pretty much wide open track i couldnt do enough to it to get it free enough which is where im hoping welding up the x will help...Im switching to a 602 only class this year so will need to keep it free...Is there a good or bad way to weld it or is it ok to weld it on jackstands or does it need to be sitting on the ground?

It should be .083 at the max. This aint no asphalt car.

After i thought about it and talked to a friend i also thought of this, if u drill holes it will allow alot of water in the chassis and let it rust fast, not saying that they are air proof but that would hael it rustand btw i talked to Joe a wild back and he told me to weld them up, and i told him how mine was and he said ok as in thats fine also. Hope this helps. He also said these cars were unstoppable out of the box and after about 15 races they seemed to slack off, so me and my friend were thinking that the floating x was a good thing until the chassis was "wore out" as in being flexed back and forth to much and it dident have the rebound it did have after a wile, then welding these chassis "gives then a new birth"lol and makes then the same as enyold goat. Sorry for the runon its hard to type fast and correct on my phone..lol good luck! O and idk how thick they are but my car has thick Azz tubing i had to order a cross member fwd and when i looked at it the new clip looked lile swing set pipe amd not a chassis. I wish i whould have got a picture of the diffrence.

Take rtv and put on the bolts and holes and it wont let water in. I've done it and it works.

What was GRT's thought behind the floated X? Is this supposed to tighten?/loosen?/what does it do to the car? ~Thanks~

The more the car flexes to a point, the bigger the sweet spot. It won't be the fastest car but it will be very consistant. Rayburn is a good example. Look at Rocket and some others. They have to sell chassis. The way to do that is to have the car work well with any bone head behind the wheel.

u may want to call GRT and have them check the car number....they only did the floating x on cars from 97-99 and very few cars in 2000...thats straight from joe garrisons mouth

I just got my first late model. Its a 1998 GRT, how would I tell if it has the floating X?

Look at the x to the left of where u set in the car and where it connects to the chassis it will be welded to a clamp and not just welded directly up
