JULY 7TH – LAWRENCEBURG SPEEDWAY – 7TH ANNUAL MERRILL DOWNEY MEMORIAL

The 7th Annual Merrill Downey Memorial featuring the Budweiser UMP Modifieds and late models will be held on Saturday night July 7th at the Lawrenceburg Speedway in Lawrenceburg, Ind.

This event is one of the largest paying modified purses in the Midwest with the winner taking home a minimum of $4,444.44. Lawrenceburg Speedway Fire-Rescue and the Merrill Downey Family have worked hard to promote this event and it could be possible for the winner to leave the track with nearly $12,500 in their pocket!

In addition to the $4,444.44 winners share there are several other contingencies:

$100 to the best appearing car

$100 to the fastest qualifier in each of the three sessions

$444 to the winner of the dash

$44 to the leader of each lap of the 44-lap feature

$1,000 bonus if the feature winner has previously won a Merrill Downey Memorial

$4,444.44 bonus if the feature winner also sets quick time in their qualifying session, wins the dash and their heat race

Lucas Lee of Paris, Tenn., is the defending Merrill Downey Memorial race winner. Other previous race winners are Devin Gilpin (2012), Joey Kramer (2013), Nick Hoffman (2014), Tyler Nicely (2015), and Victor Lee (2016).

MERRILL DOWNEY MEMORIAL THIS SATURDAY

In just four days the Budweiser UMP Modifieds will take to the Lawrenceburg Speedway in Lawrenceburg, Ind., for the 7th Annual Merrill Downey Memorial.

Lucas Lee of Paris, Tenn., is the defending Memorial Downey Memorial race winner. Last season Lee charged from his inside second row starting position to pass polesitter Trent Young and lead the final forty-two laps collecting the $4,444 winners check plus another $1,848 in lap money — giving him a grand total of $6,292

If Lee can win again on Saturday and become the first repeat winner a cool $1,000 bonus will also be waiting for him in Budweiser Victory Lane. Other former winners eligible for this bonus are Devin Gilpin (2012), Joey Kramer (2013), Nick Hoffman (2014), Tyler Nicely (2015) and Victor Lee (2016).

If a driver (first time or previous winner) can score a “clean sweep” by setting the fastest lap in their qualifying session, winning their heat race, the dash and the feature, the winner’s share will be doubled, and the feature will pay $8,888 to win!

$4,444 to Win, $444 to Start Saturday Night

Current point leader Brad Wieck leads the Budweiser UMP Modifieds into Saturday night’s $4,444 to win Merrill Downey Memorial at the Lawrenceburg Speedway in Lawrenceburg, Ind.

Wieck, a four-time Lawrenceburg Speedway track champion, has competed in two previous Merrill Downey Memorial races with his best finish a third-place last year. Wieck has had a very consistent 2018 season at the Burg with six heat wins and top ten finishes in all eight features run this year. Of those, six are top-fives, including a runner-up finish last weekend.

Scoring the win Saturday night was Joey Kramer – his 46th victory on the 3/8ths mile configuration. Kramer should be considered one of the favorites this weekend as he definitely knows his way to Budweiser Victory Lane, having won more than 25% of the races held here since the track was reconfigured prior to the 2008 season. Kramer is one of only three drivers to have started every Merrill Downey Memorial feature and has a win (2013), two seconds, two fourths, and a sixth-place finish in six races.

Former track champions Derek Groomer (2011) and Matt Hamilton (2015) are the other drivers to have started all six Merrill Downey Memorial features. Groomer has four top ten finishes with his best showing a runner-up finish last year to Lucas Lee. Hamilton, winner of three features at the Burg already this season, has a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 2015 and 2017 Merrill Downey Memorial races.

Other drivers to keep an eye on are defending track champion David Spille, who was runner-up to Victor Lee in the 2016 Merrill Downey Memorial race, and two-time track champion Scotty Kincaid. Kincaid has qualified for four of the six Merrill Downey features with his best showing a seventh-place finish in the inaugural race in 2012.

Nineteen-year-old Adam Stricker is another driver to watch out for on Saturday. Stricker, the grandson of 1973 World 100 winner Flyin’ Floyd Gilbert, has been extremely fast this season at Lawrenceburg. He started the year off with a third-place finish on opening night, then returned to Lawrenceburg in June where he won back-to-back features. 2014 Merrill Downey Memorial Champion Nick Hoffman also drove Stricker’s #68 modified to a win on Memorial Day.
