Zack Mitchell Tames Ponderosa Speedway for $7,502 Jerry Denson Memorial Win
(JUNCTION CITY, KENTUCKY) The Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series presented by Showtime Properties returned to action on Friday night at the legendary Ponderosa Speedway and it was Zack Mitchell that tamed “Kentucky’s Baddest Bullring” to capture his third career series victory! Zack laid down the fastest lap overall during the qualifying session and later rolled off from the pole position in the 40-lap ‘Jerry Denson Memorial’ headliner. The Enoree, South Carolina ace then nabbed the top spot at the drop of the green flag and led every circuit of the contest to bag the $7,502 winner’s check.
Georgian Cody Overton, who started fourth on the grid, advanced to second to finish 1.489 seconds behind the winning Mitchell at the unfurling of the checkered flag. Michael Chilton briefly held the runner-up spot around the halfway mark of the race before settling for a third place podium performance. Garrett Smith moved past four competitors to place fourth at the finish, while eleventh-starting Jason Jameson finished in the fifth position.
"After last week at Toccoa, this is a huge relief," Mitchell said in SAS victory lane. "We just flat got our tails handed to us last weekend and we went back this week, busted our butts and we had this thing down to the (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)-near bare frame on Monday. We went to work on this thing, but this old car has always been really good. I’ve got to thank (car owners) G.R. and Stacey (Smith), I know they are back home watching. I just have to thank them for the opportunity."
Zack Mitchell‘s win came aboard a Team 22 Inc. Longhorn Chassis with sponsorship in part from Victory Circle Auto Sales, Gambler Transport, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Unified Electrical Services, Brick House Tavern, LakeHouse Bar & Grill, SJK Construction, VG Performance, Bilstein Shocks, VP Racing Fuels, STAKT Racing Products, and Dirt King Apparel.
A 16-car field converged at Ponderosa Speedway on Friday for round thirteen of the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series schedule. Zack Mitchell topped the speed chart during VP Racing Fuels qualifying with his fast lap of 12.558 seconds to earn the pole position for the 40-lap main event. It also earned him an extra $102 courtesy of Shelton’s Body Shop. Beckham Malone came out on top of the lone B-Main, which solidified the back half of the starting grid for the ‘Jerry Denson Memorial.’
The Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series presented by Showtime Properties will roll into Lake Cumberland Speedway in Burnside, Kentucky on Saturday, August 29 for the 15th Annual ‘Harold Hardgrove Memorial.’ The gates will open at 3:00pm, the pits will open at 4:00pm, and the track’s Hall of Fame Ceremony will take place at 6:30pm.
