Garrett Smith Takes Lead Late to Win $12,022 Harold Hardgrove Memorial

(BURNSIDE, KENTUCKY) The Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series presented by Showtime Properties doubleheader in the Bluegrass State wrapped up in a big way on Saturday night at Lake Cumberland Speedway and it was Garrett Smith that emerged victorious in an exciting ‘Harold Hardgrove Memorial!’ Garrett timed in fourth quickest in Group A during the qualifying session prior to placing fourth in his heat race. After starting seventh on the grid in the 50-lap headliner, the Madison, Georgia standout grabbed the point from leader Mike Marlar on a lap 44 restart and led the final seven circuits to pocket the $12,022 winner’s check.

Ninth-starting Sam Seawright charged past seven competitors to secure a runner-up performance and a $6,000 payday. Defending ‘Harold Hardgrove Memorial’ winner Jason Jameson improved seven positions as well to round out the podium in third. Friday’s $7,502 ‘Jerry Denson Memorial’ victor at Ponderosa Speedway - Zack Mitchell - blasted by ten cars during the 50-lapper to land in the fourth spot, while SAS point leader Tucker Anderson captured the final position inside of the top five at the unfurling of the checkered flag.

Outside polesitter Cody Overton led the first 36 circuits before a flat tire forced him pitside for new rubber. Fourth-starting Mike Marlar took over from there and paced the field from laps 37-43 until Garrett Smith made the winning pass. Marlar would later retire with a flat tire of his own, while Overton rebounded from the tail to salvage a sixth place effort.

"I know me and Mikey (Marlar) were racing pretty good, and Sam (Seawright), the entire race," the winning Smith said in victory lane to a standing-room-only crowd at the Burnside, Kentucky facility. "I moved up on the racetrack a couple of times to get around a couple of lapped cars, but my car was just really, really good leaving the corner coming off of (turn) two and off of four. Man, our car was really good tonight."

Garrett Smith wheeled a #10 Longhorn Chassis powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine with sponsorship in part from The World Famous Cadillac Ranch, Atlanta Paving & Concrete Construction, Chase Motorsports Coach & Trailers, Stanley Painting, Will Moseley Music, SS Enterprises, Boswell Oil, VP Racing Fuels, JM Custom Laser, Schaeffer’s Racing Oil, and Slicker Graphics.

A total of 17 Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series competitors invaded Lake Cumberland Speedway on Saturday for the 15th Annual ‘Harold Hardgrove Memorial.’ Garrett Smith went quickest overall during MRP Fantasy Racing hot laps (13.033 seconds), while Michael Chilton earned Fast Time honors during VP Racing Fuels qualifying with a time of 13.171 seconds. The pair of heat races, which determined the starting grid for the A-Main, were won by Chilton and Cody Overton.

Three more Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series presented by Showtime Properties shootouts will be held over the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend in the states of Georgia and Tennessee. The annual ‘Brad York Memorial,’ which pays $5,004 to the winner, will kick off the tripleheader on Friday, September 4 at Lavonia Speedway in Lavonia, Georgia. A pair of $5,000 top prizes will then be up for grabs on Saturday, September 5 at Sugar Creek Raceway in Blue Ridge, Georgia and on Sunday, September 6 at the bad-fast Tazewell Speedway in Tazewell, Tennessee.
