CARTERSVILLE, GA – There are seven weeks to go in the 2013 NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series season, and the scenarios in the battle for the $10,000 Championship are beginning to take shape. In the coming weeks, several questions will have answers.
Can point leader Noah Daspit of Kiln, MS become the first driver in the eight-year history of the NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series to earn a perfect best 14 week total of 700 points?
Can Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS, Montana Dudley of Phenix City, AL, and Mike Palasini Jr. of Leland, MS net enough points in the coming weeks to challenge Daspit for the $10,000 2013 NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series Championship, and will they have to hit the road, away from their home tracks to do it?

Answers to those questions and more will begin to come into focus starting this weekend, as there will be ten NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series Late Model events on the Week 21 schedule in six different states with one race on Friday night at Hattiesburg Motorsports Park in Hattiesburg, MS, and nine races on Saturday night.
The Saturday night NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series action will be highlighted by the $1,000-to-win Highway 45 Crate Challenge Race at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS.
Other Saturday night races will be held at Battleground Speedway in Highland, TX, Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, FL, Clayhill Motorsports in Atwood, TN, East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, AL, St. Tammany Raceway in Lacombe, LA, Southern Raceway in Milton, FL, Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL, and Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS.
Daspit leads the NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series standings with a best 14 week total of 693 points, seven points away from a perfect total of 700 points. Daspit will be trying to net on a 47 in Week 21 competition, which means he has to finish third or better to gain any points. A 50-point win would bring Daspit’s best 14 week total to 696 points.
Daspit also has the highest Weekly Point Average (WPA) among the Top 20 drivers in the NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series point standings at 49.5, with 50 being the highest WPA a driver can earn. A WPA of 49.5 means that Daspit has an average weekly finish of at least second-place in his best 14 weeks of competition.
Lee is second in the standings with a best 14 week total of 677 points and will be trying to net on a 45. Daspit and Lee, who are teammate in the Billy Riels Racing Team, will have the opportunity to compete this weekend at their two home tracks, Hattiesburg Motorsports Park and St. Tammany Raceway. Lee has the third highest WPA at 48.36.
Dudley and Palasini are tied for the third spot in the NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series standings, as each driver has a best 14 week total of 676 points and are tied with the fourth highest WPA at 48.28.
Dudley is in a good position to climb up to the second spot in the standings, as he will be looking to net on a 40-point win at his home track, East Alabama Motor Speedway. A 50-point win at EAMS this Saturday night would give Dudley 686 points.
Palasini will have to hit the road, as his home track, Greenville Speedway in Greenville, MS, is closed for the next two weeks. Palasini will be looking to net on a 41 in NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series Week 21 competition. A 50-point win could give him sole possession of the third spot in the standings with 685 points.
Moore is fifth in the standings with a best 14 week total of 665 points and the sixth highest WPA at 47.5. Moore will be trying to net on a 43. Glisson is sixth in the NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series standings with a best 14 week total of 658 points, and he is tied for seventh on the WPA list at 47. Glisson will be trying to net on a 41 this weekend.
Scarbrough is seventh in the NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series standings with a best 14 week total of 657 points, the ninth highest WPA at 46.92, and he will be trying to net on a 42. Jordan is eighth in the standings with a best 14 week total of 639, and he will be trying to net on a 41.
Bridgmon is ninth in the NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series standings with a best 14 week total of 629 points and he will be trying to net on a 41. Arnold is tenth in the standings with a best 14 week total of 626 points, and could make some big gains in Week 21 competition, as he will be trying to net on a 25.
Waggoner, Cooper and Witt are outside the Top 10 of the NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series point standings, but are among the Top 10 on the WPA list. Waggoner is 18th in the point standings with 581 points, but he has the second highest WPA among the Top 20 in the point standings at 48.42. Waggoner still has three more weeks to earn full points before reaching the 14 week mark of his season.
Cooper is 13th in the NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series standings with 612 points and is tied for seventh on the WPA at 47 with one more week to earn full points. Witt is 15th in the standings with 604 points and has the tenth highest WPA at 46.46 and one more week to earn full points.
Drivers participating at NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series sanctioned tracks compete against each other through a points system that counts their 14 best weekly point totals over the 27-week season that runs through September 29. Drivers can compete in as many events available to then each week, only their best event point total for that week will count.
Once a driver reaches the 14-week point in their NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series season, they will begin to net points, by trying to replace the lowest weekly point total with a higher one. The Weekly Point Average is the average of their 14-week total, or up to the 14-week mark. A perfect point total is 700, and a perfect WPA is 50.
The 2013 NeSmith Chevrolet OMG WRS National Champion will earn $10,000 and the Top 10 drivers in the final National point standings will also receive cash awards from the point fund. Drivers will also compete for an additional point fund at each series sanctioned track.
The dirt late model race cars in the NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series are powered by the economical Chevrolet Performance Crate Engines that are built and sealed at the factory to prevent any expensive modifications.
