Austin Horton Sweeps NASCAR Weekend at The Hornet’s Nest

Newnan, Georgia (05/01/18) – In 2017 Austin Horton piloted his Vic Hill-powered Vape’s Gone Wild #16 Orr’s Towing/ Super K Express/ XR1 Rocket Chassis by Clint Smith Super Late Model to both the Southern All Star (SAS) Championship and Rookie of the Title. He did so with consistency, but he was unable to find his way to Victory Lane.
He changed all of that on Saturday night, when he wired the field to pick up the $4,000 tour win at Talladega Short Track. The victory – which was the richest of his young career – was his second of the weekend as he also won Friday night’s unsanctioned $2,000-to-win event at the 1/3-mile oval.
“This was just an incredible weekend for myself and my team,†an elated Horton said. “We had a great car on Friday night, and then on Saturday night we were on a rail again, and I knew if I hit my marks that would be tough to beat. Lapped traffic got kind of crazy there, but it all worked out. I just want to thank my car owner – Woody Wood with Wood Motorsports – he couldn’t be here (at the track) this weekend, but this was for him.â€
Friday night brought Austin Horton to Talladega Short Track (Eastaboga, Alabama), pulling double duty in both the Super and Crate Late Model divisions at the track known as “The Hornet’s Nest.â€
In the Super Late Model ranks, Horton topped the 22-car field in the feature to pick up his third win of the season. Cory Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word), Riley Hickman, Donald McIntosh, and Jason Hiett rounded out the Top-5 finishers in the 30-lap affair.
In a stout field of 50 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series entries, Horton logged the 16th-fastest time in his qualifying group, transferring him into the B-Main for another shot at the opening night feature. Sending the Top-3 into the show, Austin fell short with a seventh-place outing as his night came to an early end.
On Saturday evening for the $2,500 top prize in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series, Horton failed to record a lap in time trials and scratched from his B-Main.
During the same night – in a field of 40 Southern All Star Series entries – Horton secured his spot into the A-Main with the fastest time overall in qualifying. Rolling off on the pole, Austin held off Ronnie Johnson late in the 40-lap affair to capture his fourth win of the season and a $4,000 payday.
The victory was the richest of his career and his first-ever SAS triumph.
