Jimmy Mars Finally Able to Kick Off 2018 Season; Lands on Podium at Eldora!
(MENOMONIE, WISCONSIN) With inclement weather pushing back his 2018 season debut week after week, Jimmy Mars and his Mars Racing team finally busted out of their Menomonie, Wisconsin race shop on April 27-28 to start their campaign in the states of Illinois and Ohio. On Friday night at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Illinois, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series sanctioned the 'Busch 50,' which drew a premium field of cars gunning for the $12,000 payday. Jimmy unfortunately struck an inside utility tire early in the evening and that put him behind the rest of the program. He wound up placing eighth in his loaded heat race and chose to scratch from the B-Main, which kept him out of the 50-lap headliner that was eventually won by Bobby Pierce.
Things went much smoother on Saturday at the hallowed Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, as the American Late Model Series (ALMS) presided over a $5,000 to win shootout. Jimmy clicked off the fourth quickest time in his group during the qualifying session prior to running second in his heat race. After starting the 25-lap sprint from the outside of the second row, the former 'Dirt Late Model Dream' winner was a constant towards the front of the field and crossed underneath the checkers in the fourth position. However, with apparent winner Jason Jameson weighing in four pounds light at the scales, Jimmy was bumped up to third in the official finish behind only victor Nick Hoffman and runner-up Devin Gilpin. The #28 team will jump right back into racing action this upcoming weekend (May 4-5) albeit much closer to home. Jimmy plans to enter a weekly Late Model event on Friday night at his hometown Red Cedar Speedway in Menomonie, Wisconsin. On Saturday evening, the dirt-slinging action will quickly shift to Ogilvie Raceway in Ogilvie, Minnesota for the opening night of the WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series, which will pay $3,000 to the winner.
