Jeep Van Wormer Solid in Summer Nationals Action; Barney Oldfield Race Ahead
(PINCONNING, MICHIGAN) Jeep Van Wormer and his Iron Motorsports team competed in the final four DIRTcar Summer Nationals battles in the states of Michigan and Ohio from July 10-13. On Wednesday night at Thunderbird Raceway in Muskegon, Michigan, Jeep timed in second fastest in his group during qualifying, won his heat race, and later ran as high as second during the 40-lap feature before winding up fourth in the final finishing order behind only $5,000 victor Brian Shirley, Bobby Pierce, and Frank Heckenast, Jr. At I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Michigan on Thursday in a similar $5,000 to win program, Jeep once again picked up a heat race triumph and ran as high as third before slipping off the banking and eventually placing eighth in the 40-lapper.
The dirt-slinging action then turned to Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio over the weekend for the final two "Hell Tour" throwdowns. In Friday's $5,000 to win penultimate event, Jeep grabbed the fourth transfer spot through his heat race prior to moving up two spots on the one-groove racing surface in the 40-lap headliner to claim a twelfth place effort.
On Saturday evening in the series finale, a $10,000 top prize was up for grabs in the track's annual 'Birthday Race.' The Pinconning, Michigan ace placed second in his stacked heat race, drove up to third in the 50-lap main event, and crossed underneath the checkers in the sixth finishing position after accruing some left front damage to his XR1 Rocket Chassis. The #55 team will spend this week refreshing their equipment to prepare for their next event, which is scheduled for next Saturday, July 27 back at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio. The 30th Annual ‘Barney Oldfield Race’ has been rescheduled for next Saturday and a $5,500 winner’s check will be on the line in the UMP Super Late Model special that was originally slated for June 15.
