Jeep Van Wormer Leads Majority of Barney Oldfield Race; Finishes on Podium
(PINCONNING, MICHIGAN) The Iron Motorsports team ventured south to the Buckeye State on Saturday evening, July 27, as Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio played host to the rain-postponed 'Barney Oldfield Race.' The American Late Model Series (ALMS) presided over the single-day throwdown, which boasted a $5,500 winner's check.
Jeep Van Wormer won his heat race in preliminary action and later started the feature event from the outside of the front row. Jeep then led most of the 40-lap contest until a late-race caution flag with five circuits remaining helped doom the Pinconning, Michigan standout. He slipped up out of the preferred bottom groove following the restart and eventually faded back to third in the waning laps to trail only victor Rusty Schlenk and runner-up Dona Marcoullier. “It is a shame we couldn’t close the deal the other night at Oakshade,†commented Van Wormer this week. “We had such a good racecar especially early in the race. I just didn’t have a good final restart and overshot the corner by driving in too hard. Looking back, I should have just crept around that bottom and made those guys try to pass me on the outside. Our car is working well though and I’m excited about the rest of the season!â€
The #55 team will enjoy the upcoming August 2-3 weekend away from the racetrack, but Jeep has plans to return to Super Late Model competition the following Friday night, August 9 at the nearby Tri-City Motor Speedway in Auburn, Michigan. With commitments keeping him close to home that weekend, Jeep will enter the weekly program to vie for the $1,055 top prize. He has raced at Tri-City once already in 2019, as he finished a close runner-up in his season opener back on May 31.
