Dale McDowell Commands Mountain Moonshine Classic at Smoky Mountain
Hall of Famer Earns $30,000 for 11th Career LOLMDS Victory
MOORESBURG, Tenn. (June 22, 2026) — Dale McDowell showed Saturday night that he remains as formidable as ever behind the wheel of a Dirt Late Model.
The pilot of the Shane McDowell Racing No. 17m Team Zero Race Car added another triumph to his storied career by leading all 60 laps of the Mountain Moonshine Classic at Smoky Mountain Speedway to capture the $30,000 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory.
The win marked McDowell's 11th career triumph on the national tour.
“I anticipated that second start and wasn’t sure where the grip was going to be,” McDowell said in Lucas Oil Victory Lane. “Things just kind of fell our way. The car was really good, and the guys have worked hard on it. I’ve given them some feedback, and sometimes it’s probably wrong, but they keep working at it.”
After Mother Nature washed out his original plans on Thursday, the Chickamauga, Georgia, native made the short trip from his Tennessee-based shop to Smoky Mountain Speedway for the two-day Mountain Moonshine Classic.
McDowell opened the weekend on Friday by qualifying second-fastest in his group before capturing a heat race victory. Starting third in the 40-lap feature, he advanced one position to finish runner-up behind Brandon Sheppard. McDowell applied heavy pressure to Sheppard throughout the event but was unable to find a way past the eventual winner.
Back at the 3/8-mile oval on Saturday, McDowell topped his 18-car qualifying group and followed it with another heat race win. Starting from the outside of the front row in the 60-lap finale, the 60-year-old veteran outran Friday winner Brandon Sheppard to secure his second victory of the 2026 season.
McDowell crossed the finish line 1.113 seconds ahead of Devin Moran, with Sheppard completing the podium in third.
