Chris Brown Thunders through Texas for First Win of 2013
Spring, Texas (04/30/13) – Texas Thunder Speedway (Killeen, Texas) on Thursday night was the site of Chris Brown's first win of the 2013 campaign in his #21 Lone Star Hydro & Maintenance/Hughes/Roush Yates Racing Engine Open Wheel Modified!
Forty-one entries were on hand for the $4,000-to-win, USMTS Open Wheel Modified Series event, which marked the opener of a weekend triple header, and Brown started his night with an eighth to second run in his heat race to earn a spot in the redraw for the 40 lap feature. In the redraw he was the recipient of the sixth starting spot. As the finale went green Brown began working his way toward the leaders, and on lap 11 he overtook Stormy Scott in heavy, lapped traffic for the lead. Once out front he never looked back on his way to the win, which came over Scott, Zack VanderBeek, Kelly Shryock, and Johnny Scott.
“I knew lapped traffic was going to come into play, but I didn’t think it would come into play that early to be honest with you,†Brown said in victory lane. “I thought it was going to be the whole race but things kind of worked out our way, so we’ll take it.â€
Friday and Saturday evening found the team entering two more USMTS events. The action on Friday was held at Kennedale Speedway Park (Kennedale, Texas), and Brown would find the going to not be so friendly early in the evening as he drew a large number at the pill draw for the forty-six car field, and as a result had to start on the tail of the heat. After only being able to advance a single spot in his heat, he was relegated to a b-main, where he missed reaching a transfer spot by a single position. As a result he utilized a series' provisional to start the 40 lap feature in the twenty-sixth position. Despite starting at the tail of the field Brown advanced eighteen spots to an eighth place finish.
The busy weekend concluded on Saturday night at Southern Oklahoma Speedway (Ardmore, Oklahoma) with a final $4,000-to-win race. Forty-two entries filled the pits and Brown's night started on a much better note than the night prior as a second place finish in his heat race locked him into the ninth starting spot for the finale. In the 40 lap, main event Chris passed five cars to register a fourth place finish behind race winner, Johnny Scott, Zack VanderBeek, and Stormy Scott.
