Jimmy Mars Takes Punky Manor Checkers in Modified; Preps for Knoxville!
(MENOMONIE, WISCONSIN) The Mars Racing team ventured right down the road to the nearby Red Cedar Speedway in Menomonie, Wisconsin on September 20-21 for the 34th edition of the 'Punky Manor Challenge of Champions.' For the second straight weekend, Jimmy Mars unloaded both his Open Wheel Modified and his Dirt Late Model. Following a rain-out of Friday's preliminary events, the entire show for all divisions was held on Saturday at the Dunn County Rec Park.
In Open Wheel Modified action, Jimmy won his heat race, started the feature from the pole position, and took the lead shortly after the halfway mark in the 35-lapper. The Menomonie ace then went on to take the checkers and the $2,000 payday over Mike Anderson, Cory Mahder, Dave Cain, and Darrell Nelson. Behind the wheel of his Dirt Late Model, Jimmy also won his heat race and led the first 36 circuits of the main event before ignition woes relegated him to a disappointing sixteenth place performance in the $5,000 to win special. Next up for the #28 team will be the 10th Annual ‘Lucas Oil Late Model Knoxville Nationals’ at the renowned Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa from September 26-28. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will preside over the huge three-day crown jewel event, which kicks off tonight and tomorrow with a pair of $7,000 to win preliminary shows. The ‘Lucas Oil Late Model Knoxville Nationals’ will then conclude on Saturday evening with a D-Main, C-Main, B-Main, and the 100-lap, $40,000 to win feature event. In all, over $270,000 worth of prize money will be up for grabs this weekend at Knoxville Raceway.
The Lucas Oil Production Studios will also be on hand to film this three-day extravaganza that will air on three different TV Networks in 2013 including FOX Sports 1, NBC Sports, and MAVTV. Jimmy’s best career run in the Knoxville biggie came back in 2008 when he finished fourth in the 100-lapper behind only winner Tim McCreadie, Josh Richards, and Shannon Babb.
