Rodney Sanders Wins Three of Four Weekend USMTS Events
Happy, Texas (06/10/14) – Rodney Sanders batted 75% over the weekend in United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) competition as he raced to victory in three of the four events he entered in his #20 Swan Energy/MB Customs/Geddes Racing Engine Open Wheel Modified.
The team was set to open a busy weekend with the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) on Tuesday night at Marshalltown Speedway however, the event was washed away by rain. As a result, action got underway on Wednesday night at Han(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) County Speedway (Britt, Iowa). Twenty-one competitors registered for battle, and via a second place finish in heat race action Sanders earned a spot in the evenings redraw. Rodney later drew the third starting position on the grid for the $2,000-to-win finale. When the feature went green, Stormy Scott took the race lead from the pole position with Johnny Scott, Zack VanderBeek, and Sanders all in tow. Several lead changes occurred in the early laps as the top four battled closely for much of the race. Sanders would power past Johnny Scott for the top spot on lap 35, and then proceed to open up a two-second advantage over the final five laps to the finish line. Johnny Scott settled in second followed by Zack VanderBeek, Stormy Scott, and Kelly Shryock.
Thursday night found the team pitted at Fairmont Speedway (Fairmont, Minnesota) for another $2,000-to-win program with the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) warriors. Twenty-eight Open Wheel Modifieds were on hand for the event, and Sanders won his heat race from the fourth starting spot to move into the redraw for the feature, where he earned the pole position for the 30 lap finale with Pat Graham alongside.(not a nice word)When the race went green Sanders took the lead on the opening lap with Dereck Ramirez giving chase. Sanders went on to claim the flag-to-flag victory in the 40 lapper over VanderBeek, Scott, Kelly Shryock, and Daniel Hilsabeck.
Friday night the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) Open Wheel Modifieds invaded Rapid Speedway (Rock Rapids, Iowa). Twenty-six competitors registered for battle in the $2,000-to-win program, and via a second place finish in heat race action Sanders earned the sixth starting spot for the 40 lap finale. Rodney progressively worked his way forward during the course of the feature before crossing the finish line in third behind race winner, Zack VanderBeek, and Stormy Scott. Joey Jensen and Jason Krohn rounded out the top five finishers.
The weekend drew to a close on Saturday night at I-90 Speedway (Hartford, South Dakota) for a $2,000-to-win USMTS event. Twenty-three Open Wheel Modifieds were on hand, and Sanders won his heat race from the pole position to move onto the redraw for the feature, where he was the recipient of the third starting spot for the 40 lap affair. Rookie of the Year contender, Jeremy Houle led the first nine laps of the race before Johnny Scott took command on lap ten following a restart. Sanders powered ahead of Scott on lap eighteen but Scott did not give up easily fighting back for the top spot. After nearly making contact with Sanders, Scott spun and was forced to tag the rear of the field.(not a nice word)From that point Sanders blasted away from the field, and eventually took the checkered flag with nearly a seven-second lead over second-place finisher Jon Tesch. Jeremy Houle, Zack VanderBeek, and Joey Jensen completed the rest of the top five.(not a nice word)The victory marked Rodney's thirteenth of the year.
