    DirtonDirt.com launches mobile version

Just a month or so after introducing our redesigned site, we've got more news at DirtonDirt.com. The big news? We're getting smaller.

That's right, DirtonDirt.com is now small enough to slip into your pocket and take along with you as we introduce the brand new mobile version of our site, allowing race fans to access DirtonDirt.com wherever they go.

We're proud and excited about the mobile version of the site. It's clean, sharp, streamlined — and displays photographs and videos better than ever. We hope you agree that the ability to check out DirtonDirt.com on your smartphone, iPhone or Droid device will enhance your already valuable DirtonDirt.com subscription.

Let's take a brief tour of the mobile version of the site:

Logging in: Go to www.dirtondirt.com on your device's browser, and after a snazzy splash screen, you'll be prompted to log-in using the same username and password as the regular DirtonDirt.com site.

Main page: After logging in, you'll see the home page for the mobile site. It features the main story and photo (click full story to read), and our super-simple menu that leads to videos, stories, photos and blogs. There's also a search box so you can retrieve older stories, or go directly to items about your favorite drivers.

(For your first visit to the main page, we suggest adding DirtonDirt.com as an icon to your home screen. This provides easy, one-click access for your next visit and gives an app-like feel to the mobile version. For Android, go to the menu, then add a bookmark to you home screen; for iPhones and iPod Touch, click the middle icon below and select "add bookmark to home screen).

Videos: The date alongside the video menu shows the date of the most recently uploaded video. Click on "videos" and you'll see listed, newest to oldest, all the videos on the site. It's similar to the listing on the video page of the main site.

Select the video you'd like to watch, then click the video box. At that point you should have all the standard video controls to play, pause, adjust volume or click "done" to return to the previous page. Most users can rotate their devices to horizontal mode to maximize screen space.

(On a high-speed wireless network, your videos should load as quickly as you're accustomed to with the regular DirtonDirt.com site. If you're out and about and using a cellular connection, you might want to let a video load a few moments before hitting the play button).

Stories: Likewise, the date on the story menu signals the most recently added content. Click on "stories" and you'll see a newest-to-oldest listing of all the stories on the site. There are 50 stories listed, which during the busy part of the season should be about three weeks worth.

Click on a story to read it, and you'll see the headline, the author's name, a photo (if included) and the full text. When you get to the end, on some devices (including the iPhone), two quick taps atop of the screen brings you back to the top.

Photos: The photos menu uses the same dating system, and you'll see a newest-to-oldest list of the most recently added slideshows along with the date they were originally posted. Select the slideshow you want to view, and you'll soon see some of the sharpest images in Dirt Late Model racing.

Each photo includes full cutline and credit information, and the top of the screen lists how many photos are in the slideshow. If you choose, you can swipe through each photo one at a time using your finger, or click the arrow buttons at the upper right. If you'd like to watch a slideshow of all the images, touching the triangle between the arrows and show each image appear for about four seconds apiece. Click any image to pause the slideshow.

As with the videos, to maximize the real estate of your mobile device's small screen, viewing the photos horizontally enhances the experience

Blogs: This is quite similar to the story listings with the same dating system. View the blog headlines and pick the blog entry you'd like to read. Each entry is topped by the artwork with the bloggers caricature along with the writer's name (and a photo, if included). If you can double-click the top of your screen to return to the top in story mode, it should work with the blogs, too.

Search: If you're looking for a particular driver (Bloomquist?), or a particular racetrack (Volunteer?), or a particular series (MLRA?), you can type those words in the search field and click go. Results will be listed with a breakdown of stories (listed newest to oldest) and slideshows where the word appears.

Improve your searches by using quotes around "Scott Bloomquist" to find stories including his name. And cleverly choosing your search term might produce the best results. For instance, if you're searching for a particular race, it's probably better to choose the location (Wheatland) instead of the track name (Lucas Oil Speedway), because the names of the locale will always be listed in the dateline of the story.

Navigation tips: By now, you've probably already figured out the arrows left of the DirtonDirt.com logo atop the screen take you back one page. You can always use these arrows to get back to the main page ... I've found if you click too quickly on menu choices, the previous selection might pop up again. Be somewhat deliberate in making menu choices for the best experience. ... In the photos section, iPhone users can pinch to zoom in for a closer look at photos. ... If you want to visit the full website on your mobile device, click at the bottom of the home screen; likewise if you want go back to the mobile site, click just to the right of your log-in information to return.

Any questions? Please use DirtonDirt.com's contact page on the main site to email or call us with feedback and questions. We'll do our best to help.

Realize there are some compromises in developing a mobile site, partly because of screen size and partly because of other technical limitations. We've already got a laundry list of items we'd like to add, and we plan on adding some of them when we make the first revision of the mobile site, hopefully sooner rather than later.

We've tested the mobile site with a variety of devices, but with so many devices and systems, we know every feature may not work exactly the same from device to device (for the most part, using iPhones and Droids seem to work best). If you have specific questions — or feel like your device should work but it's not working — let us know.

Thanks, and don't forget to take DirtonDirt.com with you next time you head out the door!
