I have been contemplating recording conversations with the characters who have made an impact on racing in the south for several months now. Mr. Marvin Ragan owns the Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, Georgia. He is fighting an uphill battle after having been recently diagnosed with a very severe type of leukemia. One doctor has given him less that two months to live. Having known Mr. Ragan for quite some time and knowing a little bit about his background, I thought he would be an excellent choice to begin my interviews. Mr. Marvin is a southern gentleman who has worked hard throughout his life to get to where he is today. His father was a racer and as many of you know, sons like to often follow in their dad's footsteps. That is the way it was with Marvin. He also exposed his younger brother, Ken, to racing and the both of them got really involved in NASCAR back primarily in the 1980's. Ken is current NASCAR driver David Ragan's dad. Overall, I spent around three hours just listening to Mr. Marvin talk about racing from back in the 1950's up until today. It seemed like just a few minutes and I could have listened all day or longer. I came away from the interview with a profound respect for Marvin Ragan for what he's done in his lifetime and how he is facing his current medical crisis. I think you will too if you get a chance to watch the videos I have posted.
