FASTRAK Drivers SPOTLIGHT - #7 "Cool Blue" Clinton Cook

(Four Oaks,NC) Okay everyone it's time for another segment of our NEW Feature the FASTRAK Racing Series is doing to let the best race fans of all the fans of the "Premier Pro Late Model Series in the Country" get to know the drivers on the tour who put the "pedal to the metal" every show to excite the crowd where ever the touring series goes it's entitled the "FASTRAK Drivers SPOTLIGHT". This one is about one of the drivers who race full time on the FASTRAK City Chevrolet Touring Division in the Southeast/Mideast Region from Radford,VA driver of the #7 "Cool Blue" Clinton Cook.

    Tell us about yourself?

I am from Radford Virginia. I attended Radford High School and then I went to Roanoke College. I have been around racing most of my life. Mainly through watching my dad’s asphalt late model team race. Growing up I was heavily involved in sports all the way up through high school and briefly on the college level. Then I got into dirt racing while I was at Roanoke College.

How did you get into racing? How old were you? First car/class?

My dad has been involved in racing since the late 70’s. He started racing motorcycles then moved to cars. He mainly drove or owned asphalt late models. He had a ton of success in the early 90’s when Stacy Compton drove for him. At this time I was pretty young and I wasn’t really involved in the sport. When I got to high school my dad decided not to own cars anymore and choose to just sponsor a couple of teams. When I got to college my dad decided he wanted to get back into racing and Fred Brown and Tam Topham convinced him to get a dirt late model. The plan was for my dad to race the car and I was going to work on it while I was home from college in the summer. He let me practice it one time and that was it. I was hooked and I told my dad he needed to get another car because I was going to race. My dad wound up getting another car and me & him started racing together in 2006. The first car I ran was Crate Late Model in 06, I was 21.

What is your favorite racing memory?

My favorite racing memory was definitely the first race that I ever won in 2008. I got real close to winning in my first two years of racing a late model but to get that first win just proved all the hard work was worth it.

Greatest achievement in your racing career?

My greatest achievements in my career are my two track championships at Wythe Raceway in 2008 and 2010

Any superstitions (peanuts not allowed in pits, etc)?

I don’t have any superstitions. I also do not believe in ghosts or the tooth ferry.

What is the story behind running the number you choose?

The cars my dad owned were always blue cars with the number 7 on the side. So there wasn’t much choice on what number I run.

What is the hardest part of racing?

The hardest part of racing in my opinion is just trying to find enough time to get everything you need to get done on the car done. Me, Dave, Jimmy and my dad all work full time jobs so it is tough some weeks to get a car prepare as well as you need to every week to go racing. Also racing has gotten more and more expensive every year. So it has been tough trying to find quality sponsors to partner up with our team to help with cost of racing.

Tell us what you like most about your home track? What are some of your other favorite tracks & why do you like them so much? What’s the hardest track you’ve ever competed at?

My home track is Wythe Raceway. What I really like about Wythe is that it is really fast and smooth and usually you can race all over the track. Also Fred Brown is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet and he is one of the best promoters in the country. His son Perry preps the track as good as anyone in the southeast and always gives us an awesome track to race on. One of my other favorite tracks has to 311 Speedway in Madison North Carolina. I just really like 311 a lot. It is just a fun place to run at. It’s pretty close to the house so we can go run there a lot and people down there just love racing. Also 311 has one of the best pay outs in our area for a local show. So if you can run in the top 5 down there you can make some money to help pay for some of your expenses. The hardest tracks that we compete on are usually the tracks that end up being one groove race tracks or tracks that are not very well prepared. It just sucks working on your car all week and go to a track that is not prepare properly.

What do you like to do when you are not racing?

When I am not racing I really enjoy just hanging out with my friends and family and spending a lot of time on the lake. Also, like playing golf whenever I get a chance and I love working out.

People you’d like to thank & sponsors.

First of all I have to thank my dad for everything he has done for me and our race team. Also I have to thank David Wikle, Jimmy Wheeler and Chad Wikle. Without these guys there is no way we could go racing. They do most of the hard work and I am just the guy lucky enough who gets to drive the car. Also I could not race without the help of our family business Cook’s Clean Centers, Norwood development, Jason Atkins at Flag to Flag and all the product people that help us out.
