K-C Raceway Results FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-Sunny skies, a large crowd, and 111 of the best cars in the Midwest filed into K-C Raceway Saturday night to help honor those who served in the military as part of the Veteran's Appreciation Night. Sprint car victor Danny Smith, of Chillicothe, said it best in victory lane, "Special thanks to the Veterans who are here tonight. Without them, this (racing) wouldn't be possible." Joining Smith in victory lane was Richmond, Indiana's Duane Chamberlain (Late Models) and local fan favorite Dave "Fireball" Pinkerton. Earning a hard-fought win in the Dan Reno Memorial Hobby Stock feature was defending champion Jamie Adams of Laurelville.
So many cars and fans rushed the K-C parking lot that racing had to be delayed at least 20 minutes to allow entry into the pit area. "That's a good thing," smiled owner Jeff Schrader. "It is one of those problems you like to have. First, I would like to thank all Veterans for coming out tonight, and thank all the many fans and drivers who chose to race at K-C Raceway. I appreciate you all very much."
Two unplanned highlights of the night were having Hall of Famer Charlie Swartz charge from 8th to a 4th place transfer spot in his heat. This was only the second time he has been in a race car in the past ten years; subbing for son Audie who was helping a customer sort out a car in Missouri. The other highlight of the unfortunate nature was a wicked end-for-end hot lap flip by Wes McGlumphy. The driver was ok but his car very badly damaged.
In the Goodyear 410 Sprint Car main, outside pole sitter Todd Kane took the early lead over Danny Smith. Action slowed early when Josh Moffett in the Charlie Brown Special spun in turn two. When lap five rolled around Danny Smith was able to put a slide job on Kane for the lead, but Kane came back at the new leader for a lead swap that didn't stick.
Veteran John Shewbrooks clipped a spinning Moffett on lap six, nearly flipping to bring out the second caution. From that point on the race went green. Smith built up a pad, while Kane and Nier battled hard for second. Kane began a slow fade as the race progressed as Jimmy Stinson passed both Kane and Nier for second. Cole Duncan and Aaron Higgins, two K-C young guns battled nip-and-tuck for 4th as Stinson and Nier closed the gap on Smith, who had to get up on the wheel in heavy lapped traffic.
Josh Davis worked on Kane in an effort to break into a top five after race-long battles with hard chargers Zach Ames, Nathan Skaggs, and hot-footed lady driver Brandy Bower.
Although Stinson, Nier, and Higgins--a trio of Billy Jarrell cars--ate up huge chunks of valuable turf, Smith was able to pull of his second K-C win of the year. Rounding out the top ten were Smith, Stinson, Nier, Higgins, Duncan, Kane, Davis, Ames, Skaggs, and Brandy Bower. Nier was the hard charger of the race in picking four positions.
Said Smith in victory lane, "The car was pretty darn fast. The guys did a good job on the set-up, and the track was once again fast. You could run anywhere on it."
Smith then thanked our veterans and announced, "Shirley Kear has helped me out a bunch. Tonight I am making this Shirley Kear night at K-C Raceway. Also, thanks to everyone who helped get me here and for the fans who come out and support their local track."
Much drama centered around the Dan Reno Memorial Feature, a race run in honor of a great driver and man, Mr. Dan Reno. Brother Darrell Reno paced the field in Dan's #22 as a memoriam to K-C's fallen hero. Ironically, the race paid $1022 to win for driver Jamie Adams and $122 to start. The #22 all the way through the payout was a symbol of Reno's car number.
In the feature event it took three restarts to get the race underway, but when the pack was turned loose Jamie Adams and Bruce Gray, Jr. unleashed a dog-fight. Adams barked the loudest in the early going, but Gray was always within a few car lengths. As the track laid some rubber, the top three moved with feet of each other in a wild fight from number one.
Joining the pack was Kentucky driver Colby Taylor in his first visit to the K-C high-banks. Taylor pressed Gray for second, finally making the pass on lap 11. The trio continued two-wide until Taylor and Adams stretched it out for a fierce five-lap shoot out. Taylor edged by several times and tried Adams, side by side, through three and four coming to the checkered.
Taylor waivered just a little as he spun to the finish line with Gray picking up second. The Dan Reno Memorial Feature top ten: Jamie Adams, Bruce Gray, Jr., Colby Taylor, Brandon Mather, Brandon Thompson, Adam Jordan, Tim Cutler, Phil Rice, Travis Pertuset, and Roger Mossbarger. The Hobby Stock hard charger was Adam Jordan, who came from 15th to 6th.
Adams said in victory lane, "I've never raced against that boy before, but he is a helluva good racer. We raced hard and I don't think either of us have a mark on the car."
"We did a lot of changing on the car tonight, but I think we made the right call. We have a lot of good drivers in this division and they are all getting faster. Once again thanks to everyone who helps me with the car. This win is for you."
Insane Duane Chamberlain had won just about everywhere he has raced. Saturday night, he added historic K-C Raceway to the long list. Soft spoken and polite off the track, Chamberlain is a "terror" on the track. Saturday was no exception.
Hall of Famer Delmas Conley and Racin' Jason Montgomery brought the field to the green flag for the super fast AMRA Late Model A-main. Conley got the jump with Montgomery close in tow. The field got strung out early, but by lap six things started to heat up for the point. Chamberlain moved into second, while Josh McGuire reeled in Montgomery in a fight for third.
Chamberlain pressured Conley low in a side-by-side dual, while McGuire pulled under Montgomery. Exiting turn four of the ninth lap the four cars raced double-file, nose to tail. Something had to give as the close-quarters made for some anxious, high-speed moments. McGuire drifted high and the contact (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)ed his mount side ways as he and Montgomery came to a grinding halt on the front chute wall. This was the second early exit for Montgomery while running either second or third over the past two weeks.
When the race resumed Conley grabbed the lead, but Chamberlain's Patrick Sheltra Racing #23/Rocket Chassis made a Kamakazee dive and made it stick for the lead. Meanwhile, Rod Conley again came on late in the race, picking off several cars for a top three. A lot of impressive work was displayed by the top-ten drivers, who diced two-wide for much of the event. The Late Model hard charger was Billy Gullion who was the most impressive of the group in a 16th to 6th run.
Rounding out the top ten were Duane Chamberlain, Delmas Conley, Rod Conley, Mark Frazier, Nick Bocook, Billy Gullion, Ralph Withem, Jeff Houser, Josh Tidwell, and Dylan Huron.
Said victor Chamberlain, "Finally! I thank you all. This has been a couple years in coming. I love this track, but I've had bad luck and I have finished second too many times. I'm glad to finally get it done here at K-C."
Win or lose, Dave "Fireball" Pinkerton is always exciting. After bad luck last week, Pinkerton turned the tables for a more favorable conclusion.
Pinkerton outran a host of defenders, but had his hands full of Brian Whiteman and Jeremy Berwanger most of the race. About midway, Pinkerton stretched out his lead in his "Powered by HORIZON #8 Dirt Modified", but in the closing laps he was up on the chip as Berwanger and Whiteman closed the gap.
Dave McWilliams, Miles Cook, Jeremy Rayburn, and Shaun Scott all had great runs toward a top five, but it was Cook who had it high against the wall to win the Hard Charger award. Cook advanced from 16th to 5th in a tremendous run after experiencing bad luck in his heat race.
Pinkerton was smooth over the last couple laps to hold off Berwanger, who had jumped ahead of Whiteman. Rounding out the top ten were Pinkerton, Berwanger, Whiteman, McWilliams, Cook, Jeremy Rayburn, Shaun Scott, Kevin Delany, Greg Anderson, and Mark Bailey.
Pinkerton said, "It's been a while. We were out there just having fun. Thanks to all the fans who came out tonight. I hope we put on a great race. Jeremy and Brian ran me clean and hard most of the race. Hats off to them, and thanks to everyone who made this win possible."
K-C will host AMRA Late Models, AMRA Advanced Services Modifieds and Hobby Stocks Saturday, June 4. K-C will also host a practice session/Test-n-tune Tuesday, May 31 from 6 - 10 p.m. Cost of Admission is free, however, all cars will have a $25 entry fee. Concessions will be available.
