RINGGOLD, GA) With the summer kicking off with this weekend’s Memorial Day Holiday the S.R.R.S SUPER LATE MODELS invaded the 1/3 mile clay oval of Boyd’s Speedway. With 32 drivers signed in to compete for the top prize of $3000 and a history of three wide racing the capacity crowd on hand was assured to get their monies worth this Memorial Day Weekend. But before the S.R.R.S. SUPER LATE MODELS would roll off the local support divisions would line up for two heat races in each division. First out would bring the 16 cars signed in for B-Hobby with Jason Brown and Dallas Brooks taking heat victories. The CRATE LATE MODELS were next and a pair of veterans in Robbie Mason and Craig Burrows showing the way in each of their respected heats. A-Hobby winners were Chuck Cooper and Arva Brooks. The last of the local division heats saw the FWD taken by Matt Patton and James Dykes. It was now super late model qualifying time and under S.R.R.S. rules we would qualify in three groups locking in the top 9 from the field of 32 sending the remainders to one of the last chance B-Mains. Group 1 top qualifier would find a familiar #5 taking the spot as Ronnie “The Chattanooga Flash” Johnson was fastest of 11 drivers. Group 2 saw Brandon Kinzer set the overall fastest time for the pole of the nights 40 lap feature. With the second fastest time taken by the night’s final competitor as Skip Arp from Georgetown, TN taking the outside front row spot. Other top qualifiers were Stacey Holmes, Todd Morrow, Tim Busha, Riley Hickman, Josh Putnam and Jason Welshan. In the last chance B-Main #1 Mark Douglas would lead Lamar Scoggins, Aaron Ridley, Brian Hickman and Jake Knowles to the checkered flag. In B-Main #2 Jacob Grizzle led Paul Tims, Todd Hernandez and Mark Vineyard. In the final B-Main Mark Rosner showed Chuck Cooper, Anthony Burroughs and John Owenby the way to victory lane. The nights two provisional would be Rick Hixson and Kevin Gibson. The field was now set, so while we sent each driver back to the pits to fine tune their racers we first had features in each of our local divisions. First out would bring the B-Hobby racers and after last week’s caution filled event everyone was hoping for a clean caution free event. The race was slowed for only 2 cautions on the night and it saw the familiar #45 of Dallas Brooks take another victory over Jonathan Sims, Jason Brown, Mike Chapman and Corey Sanders. In Crate Late Model Craig Burrows and Robbie Mason brought the field to the green flag and it would be the first caution free race of the evening. While Burrows took the early lead the race for second between Mason and multiple feature winner Jason Welshan in tow. Welshan would pass Mason early while Mason had to hold off a hard charging Jeff Smith who had started dead last due to a mechanical problem during his heat race. Following Smith to the line was Jerry Coffman to round out the top five. The A-Hobby was up next with #37 Chuck Cooper and #48 “Daddy Brooks” Arva Brooks bring the field to the green. Cooper took early command while a pair of Brooks fought the battle for second. Arva would eventually give way to the younger #148 Booger Brooks for second and later the #20 Larry Higgins for third. Arva Brooks would settle for fourth followed by Jeff McKenzie in fifth. It was now time to bring the S.R.R.S. SUPER LATE MODELS to the front stretch for the opening ceremonies for the nights event. With Brandon Kinzer and Skip Arp leading the field of 24 cars around the 1/3 mile clay oval the area’s top competitors lined up for a four wide salute to the capacity crowd. As the green flag flew Arp would take the early lead of Kinzer and Johnson. Johnson would start his familiar drive on the bottom as Arp lead from the top of the racing surface. As the cars raced three and four wide throughout the field Arp held on to the lead of Johnson and Kinzer. Kinzer would fall into the prey of Tim Busha and Stacy Holmes. Johnson would squeeze by Arp as the two started to maneuver slower traffic. Once Johnson was out front with a clear lane to race his race the familiar #5 seemed to pull away with ease. Johnson would capture another S.R.R.S. SUPER LATE MODEL FEATURE taking the $3000 top prize. Georgetown’s Skip Arp would hold on to second followed by Tim Busha, Stacy Holmes, Brandon Kinzer and Riley Hickman. In the nights final FWD feature #19 Thomas Gilbert would take his first victory of the year followed by Matt Patton, Daniel Burnette, Richard Hickman and Josh Kilgore. The crowd surely got the monies worth this night. Thanks to the hard working staff at Boyd’s Speedway that has a racing surface superbly prepared each and every week.
