Boyds Speedway Result 6-10--2011.....the official story!
RINGGOLD, CHATTANOOGA) With a regular race program on tab this week at Boyds Speedway’s 1/3 mile clay oval, action got underway with heats in all the respective divisions. Heat race winners were: B-Hobby’s-Lamar Hughes, Crate Late Model’s-Chatsworth’s Jeff Smith and Maryville’s Jason Welshan, A-Hobby’s-Booger Brooks and Steve Tate, Steel-headed Late Model’s-Kevin Gibson and Ringgold’s Jamie Perry. Rounding out the heat winners were Thomas Gilbert and Matt Patton in the Front Wheel Drive Division.
With the Feature Lineups set it was time to get down to action. First out would bring the B-Hobby racers with Lamar Hughes and Jason Brown starting from the pole. Brown took the lead from the outside starting position and was only slowed twice for cautions on his way to victory lane as he was followed by Corey Sanders, Dallas Brooks, Alvin Sewell and Mike Chapman. Brown’s victory broke a streak of wins by Division Points leader Dallas Brooks. In Crate Late Model a pair of battle-scared veteran would bring the field to the green. With Maryville’s Jason Welshan and Chatsworth’s Jeff Smith both seeking yet another victory. Welshan would take the lead on lap 1 with a charging Jeff Smith in tow. The race would be slowed on lap 17 with a caution for Tyler Adams coming to a stop in turn 4. Welshan would hold off Smith at the line to take yet another hard fought victory. Smith would be followed by David Tindell, Jerry Coffmam and Todd Stafford. The A-Hobby division would see the 16 racers bring their racing machines to the front stretch to line up for what would turn out to be a little racing an a lot of cautions. A race slowed with 7 cautions. With points leader Booger Brooks driving the D1 and Steve Tate bringing the field to the green flag Brooks was warned for jumping the start as the field would line-up for the restart, Brooks would take the early lead on lap 1. A lap 1 caution for #37 Blake Armitage would slow the field with a spin in turn 1. As Brooks and Tate fought for the lead the race was slowed six more times. As the end of the race neared Tate was thinking of the last weeks last turn pass that Brooks had placed on him denying him his first victory. Would the table be turned this week with Tate following Brooks? With a late race caution on lap 13 the field was tighten back up for the two lap shootout. As the field came to the white flag Tate was able to muscle his way by Brooks with a similar pass in turn 4. Tate must have thought it was the last lap as he slowed in turn 1 on the white flag lap as Brooks fought to regain the lead. Tate would eventually would be charged with the caution giving the lead back to Brooks. Brooks would go onto take his second victory in a row followed by Chuck Cooper, Tony “Cowboy†Todd, Travis Lawson and Jeff McKenzie.
The Feature Event of the evening would bring the Steel Headed Late Models to the racing surface for their 25 lap $1000 to win feature. With a pair of long-time Super Late Model Competitors in Ringgold’s Jamie Perry and Kevin Gibson starting from the front row. Perry would take the lead from the outside pole starting position with Gibson right on his heels. The two would battle for several laps with Perry using the bottom side of the racing surface and Gibson beginning his charge to the front from the high side. Eventually getting the outside to work to his liking Gibson would take the lead on lap 10 with a high side pass in turn 4. The two would battle side by side as they began to work the slower traffic. Perry would choose the right line on lap 18 as Gibson was slowed by slower traffic giving the lead back to Perry. Perry would hold off Gibson for the remaining laps to take the victory and the lead in the hard fought Division Points Challenge. Gibson would settle for second followed by Rick Hixson coming from his 8th place starting position, John Owenby and Todd Morrow. In the final feature of the evening a great battle between Matt Patton and James Dykes would give the fans something to hang around a watch. Patton would take the victory with Thomas Gilbert nipping Dykes at the checkered flag as Dykes car slowed on the final lap. Rounding out the top five would be Daniel Burnette and Denver Shrum.
A great night of racing, once again thanks to the track officials for a great racing surface and a night of racing all finished by 10:30. With the Chattanooga/Hamilton County Riverbend in full swing next week as country singer Alan Jackson coming to perform on friday. Boyds Speedway will take the week off and will be back the next week June 24th with the V.R.S. Super Late Models on tab for their 40 lap $3000 to win.
