Skyline Speedway Results FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STEWART, OHIO-AMRA RWT Champion Matt Holcomb was good, he was lucky, and he ultimately made a clean sweep of the third annual Greg Schilling Memorial before a packed house at Billy Jarrell's Skyline Speedway Friday night. Evans, WV driver Chris Garnes won his third straight AMRA Late Model main. After suffering a bad flip last weekend, Chillicothe's Josh Davis stoked the coals to the 22D for his first Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association win of the season, and Tracy Fritter claimed the Modified Lites main event. Overall, 118 cars graced the pit area with 51 of the best open wheel modifieds in the Midwest hoping to stake claim at one of the division's biggest paydays.
Holcomb was somewhat of a magician, pulling the old hat trick to cap off the win. Holcomb set C&S Racing fast time, claimed the Wetzel's/B&J Welding Dash, then came home with the $1,699 Schilling Memorial win. Holcomb was fast out of the gate with a sizzling 15:63 time trial, then flexed some muscle with a dicing dash win over Aukland.
The performance on the track was just as exciting as the off-the-track drama in the running of the third annual Greg Schilling Memorial. For 25-laps Matt Holcomb, the defending AMRA (American Motor Racing Association) Road Warrior Champion, led the race only to have Late Model Hall of Famer Aukland get by in lapped traffic.
"I thought that was the race," said Holcomb. "I couldn't hit my spots because of the lapped cars and Rick could see what I couldn't, and took advantage of it."
For the racing fan, Friday's special was a Broadway hit. Holcomb got the early lead out of the gate, but Aukland was within inches every stretch of the first 25 markers. Aukland occasionally tried the high side, then moved down low and began to politely nudge under the leader Holcomb. Finally, lapped cars came into play. The first few Holcomb quickly disposed of, but as he progressed up the ladder, a competitive traffic jam emerged, making it rough for the youngster.
Holcomb got trapped behind a backmarker and Aukland took to the highside. The veteran Aukland led the 26th circuit and appeared to be on his way to victory lane, taking the checkered flag first. Aukland made a bonsai move that kept two cars between him and Holcomb at the finish. However, an after-race inspection found the use of an unapproved part on the 2a of Aukland and resulted in disqualification. The result was that heartbreak turned to celebration for Holcomb.
Said Holcomb in victory lane, "I thought the difference in this one was going to be the lapped traffic, and it wasn't to my advantage. But I guess patience paid off. To lose this one after leading was a downer, but to end up with the win is great. Hoosier Tires on this Coyote Chassis and a week's worth of work from Jordan Riggs certainly made the difference. Jordan made this car go the way it did tonight. It's great to win this for the Schilling family."
Closing in on the leaders late in the race was a blitzing Kevin Morehouse with Jeremy Berwanger in tow. Andy Bond and northern KY invader Dave McWilliams hammered it hard for the duration of the race, while Chris Stotts moved from 14th to 7th, falling just short of Hard Charger honors. Roy Roush claimed the hard-charger award with an 18th to tenth place run.
Rounding out the top ten were Matt Holcomb, Kevin Morehouse, Jeremy Berwanger, Andy Bond, David McWilliams, Todd Robinson, Chris Stotts, Robbie Evans, Bart Hartman, and Roy Roush.
Said second place Kevin Morehouse, "The difference between a strong second and winning was that I needed a caution. The tires kicked in about halfway, but Rick and Matt had built up a good lead. I was hoping for a caution, but second is good with this group of racers."
"I was just happy to make the race," smiled former AMRA champ Jeremy Berwanger who brought home third. "Racing with this group is an honor, and it was very special to bring home third tonight. The car was great."
The nearly caution-free Late Model main saw Chris Garnes lead flag to flag in another check-out run. Garnes' Swartz Extreme blasted the field with another hard-charging effort. Most of the race saw second place Ralph Withem give chase to Garnes with a strong run early. Withem then had to defend second against K-C Burdette in a race-long battle. After Withem shed Burdette he found himself wheel-to-wheel with Tyler Carpenter. Ultimately Withem held on for runner-up, halting fast timer Carpenter's charge to the front. Rounding out the top ten were Ralph Withem, Tyler Carpenter, Larry Bond, K-C Burdette, Dan Morrison, Jeff Burdette, Andy Bond, Rick Williams, Freddie Carpenter, and Colten Burdette. Rick Williams was the hard-charger in a 16th to 8th place run.
In the 410 OVSCA Sprint Car main, Fast-timer Josh Davis blasted into the initial lead with Andre Layfield, subbing for Jimmy Stinson, in the Billy Jarrell #22. On lap 9 Layfield put on a slide job and made it stick, then a lap and a half later Davis moved down into the rubber and blasted by Layfield.
"Andre showed me where the fast line was. After last week's flip, my back and tail bone were sore and I could hardly hold myself up in the seat, but with a win insight you find a way to make it work," said Davis.
After Layfield shuffled back to second Jimmy Nier and Wayne McPeek waltzed past, then Aaron Higgins followed in tow. Five cars were within six car lengths of the lead in an anything-goes outcome. Higgins bagged McPeek, the West Virginia Warrior, and then Higgins challenged for the lead. With four laps to go Nier collected a lapped car and suffered a flat.
Higgins tried Davis several times, then Layfield came back to life in a last ditch effort to shoot for the lead. When all was said and done Davis held on for the win. "We took the car to Tony Beaber's Monday to get the frame straight. Heck I don't think it ever went this good. He got it right on. This week was an outhouse to the penthouse week and we sure needed it."
Rounding out the top ten were Josh Davis, Aaron Higgins, Andre Layfield, Wayne McPeek, Brian Benson, Dave (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son, Kory Crabtree, Chris Myers, Beau Stewart, and Greg Mitchell. Kory Crabtree, who flipped in his heat, got his thoughts and his mount back in order for hard-charger honors, zooming from 15th to 7th.
In the Modified Lites, one of the best in the divisions, Tracey Fritter brought home the win over Cody Bova, and Tyler Riggs. In the Mike's Auto Body Mini-Wedges Cole Mayle went 4-for-4 over Jason Gillian, Coleman Evans, Martin Gibson, Jr., Tyler Evans, Hunter Teters, Coleton Perine, Hunter Newlon, Tanner Hendrix, and Skyler Zimmerman.
Next week is the first leg of the OVSCA 410 Sprint car Speed Weekend featuring the outlaw 410 sprint cars July 1 at Skyline, July 2 at Ohio Valley (Lubeck, WV) and I-77 Raceway Park on Sunday, July 3.
