Huge Purse at stake for the Silver Dollar Nationals
The Silver Dollar Nationals on July 22 & 23 at I-80 Speedway will be offering the largest purse of the 2011 dirt late model racing season in the State of Nebraska. The 80 lap feature will pay out nearly $94,000 with 34 cars starting the event. The purse for the event is larger than many “Crown Jewel events†of dirt late model racing.
“We wanted to create a purse that paid down well and we believe our purse from 2nd through 6th pays better than many of the high dollar purses.†Say co-owner Ed Kosiski. The Silver Dollar Nationals pays $25,000 to win, $12,000 for second, $7,000 for third, $6,000 for fourth, $5,000 for fifth and $3,500 for sixth on down to $1,000 for the thirty-fourth starter.
Activities get underway on Thursday, July 21 with a complete night of racing for the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series. In addition, there will be open practice for both MLRA Sanctioned Super Late Models and USMTS Modifieds in preparation for the Silver Dollar Nationals. Grandstand Admission is just $10 for Adults, with Ages (6-15) $5 and 5 and under free. Pit Passes are $20 with a NASCAR license and $30 without a NASCAR license.
On Friday, July 22 things heat up with the Malvern Bank.com Qualifiers for Super Late Models, and a complete program of racing for the USMTS Modifieds paying $2,000 to win. All Super Late Model drivers will run two qualifying heats. The second heat a driver competes in will be an invert from how he started his first heat. (If you start your first heat on the pole, you start your second heat on the tail, etc.). However, you may not be competing against the same drivers in the second heat that you competed against in the first. There will be no time trials. The heat race purse will be $500 per heat; $250 to win, $150 for second and $100 for third. REM will also pay $250 to the top qualifier.
Then on Saturday, July 23, the USMTS will run another complete program paying $2,000 to win and $300 to start with the Super Late Models running Last Chance Races and then the one we have all been waiting for, the Big 80 lap feature paying $25,000 to win and $1,000 to start. REM will also pay a $250 contingency to a driver in the feature.
26 cars will qualify out of the heat races and last chance races for the Silver Dollar Nationals. In addition, there will be provisionals awarded as follows:
2 for MLRA (Highest drivers in MLRA points not qualified). Currently the top two in MLRA points are Al Purkey & Kyle Berck.
2 for SLMR (highest drivers in SLMR points not qualified) The top two in SLMR points are Travis (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)es & Joe Kosiski.
1 each from the highest finishers from the April 2 Spring Meltdown, the May 29 Alphabet Soup Race and the July 1 Midwest Trifecta races, that have not qualified for the Silver Dollar Nationals. Brad Looney of Republic, Missouri became the first driver to guarantee a spot in the starting lineup of the Silver Dollar Nationals when he won the Spring Meltdown. Chad Simpson of Mt. Vernon, Iowa became the second driver to guarantee a spot in the lineup when he won the Alphabet Soup Race. Finally at the Midwest Tri-Fecta Columbus Junction, Iowa’s Jason Utter passed Chris Simpson at the flagstand to secure his spot in the Silver Dollar Nationals.
Finally, 1 provisional will be auctioned off with a minimum bid of $1,500. The amount of the bid exceeding the $1,000 start money will be split by the last 20 placed finishers in the feature.
The tire rule will be WRS-55 or UMP Style LM40. (LM40 is the same tire used at Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway for the Dream and the World 100).

Entries continue to flow in for the Silver Dollar Nationals with Brian Birkhofer, Clint Smith, Brad Looney, Al Purkey, Bryant Goldsmith, John Anderson and David Turner being the latest to join a list that includes national names such as; Steve Francis, Dale McDowell, Jimmy Mars, Don O’Neal, Jared Landers, Wendell Wallace, Terry Phillips and Jeremy Payne.
In addition to one of the biggest dirt late model races in the country you will also be seeing the exciting “Dirt Knights†of the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) running complete shows on both Friday and Saturday night. The USMTS races will be part of the Great Plains Regional Tour leading up to their “Hunt for the National Championship,†which begins August 11.
The USMTS features the fastest dirt modified racing in the country and are featured on the popular television series “Dirt Knights.†When discussing the drivers of the USMTS you have to start with Mr. USMTS, Kelly Shryock. Shryock of Fertile, Iowa is a 9-time champion of the series. Then there is the reigning USMTS National Champion and current Southeast Region point leader Jason Hughes of Westville, Oklahoma.
Perhaps the hottest driver in the USMTS is Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa. Gustin is Hughes teammate at Gressel Racing and one of the young lions of the USMTS tour, “The Reaper†is the defending USMTS Great Plains Region Champion and is currently leading the points in four of the six USMTS regions. Gustin trails Shryock by a single point in the Great Plains Region point battle which will be decided at the Silver Dollar Nationals.
Jon Tesch of Watertown, South Dakota is also currently in the hunt for the Great Plains region title. Johnny Scott of Las Cruces, New Mexico is another young and exciting driver on the rise. Then there is the rest of the USMTS stars as they get set to battle some of the best local modified drivers in the area.
